235. 235.
Paṇḍupalāsova dānisi, yamapurisāpi ca te [taṃ (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)] upaṭṭhitā; Like a withered leaf are you now; death's messengers await you.
Uyyogamukhe ca tiṭṭhasi, pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati. You stand on the eve of your departure, yet you have made no provision for your journey!
236. 236.
So karohi dīpamattano, khippaṃ vāyama paṇḍito bhava; Make an island for yourself! Strive hard and become wise!
Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo, dibbaṃ ariyabhūmiṃ upehisi [dibbaṃ ariyabhūmimehisi (sī. syā. pī.), dibbamariyabhūmiṃ upehisi (?)]. Rid of impurities and cleansed of stain, you shall enter the celestial abode of the Noble Ones.
237. 237.
Upanītavayo ca dānisi, sampayātosi yamassa santike; Your life has come to an end now; You are setting forth into the presence of Yama, the king of death.
Vāso [vāsopi ca (bahūsu)] te natthi antarā, pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati. No resting place is there for you on the way, yet you have made no provision for the journey!
238. 238.
So karohi dīpamattano, khippaṃ vāyama paṇḍito bhava; Make an island unto yourself! Strive hard and become wise!
Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo, na punaṃ jātijaraṃ [na puna jātijaraṃ (sī. syā.), na puna jātijjaraṃ (ka.)] upehisi. Rid of impurities and cleansed of stain, you shall not come again to birth and decay.
239. 239.
Anupubbena medhāvī, thokaṃ thokaṃ khaṇe khaṇe; One by one, little by little, moment by moment,
Kammāro rajatasseva, niddhame malamattano. a wise man should remove his own impurities, as a smith removes his dross from silver.
240. 240.
Ayasāva malaṃ samuṭṭhitaṃ [samuṭṭhāya (ka.)], tatuṭṭhāya [taduṭṭhāya (sī. syā. pī.)] tameva khādati; Just as rust arising from iron eats away the base from which it arises,
Evaṃ atidhonacārinaṃ, sāni kammāni [sakakammāni (sī. pī.)] nayanti duggatiṃ. even so, their own deeds lead transgressors to states of woe.
241. 241.
Asajjhāyamalā mantā, anuṭṭhānamalā gharā; Non-repetition is the bane of scriptures; neglect is the bane of a home;
Malaṃ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṃ, pamādo rakkhato malaṃ. slovenliness is the bane of personal appearance, and heedlessness is the bane of a guard.
242. 242.
Malitthiyā duccaritaṃ, maccheraṃ dadato malaṃ; Unchastity is the taint in a woman; niggardliness is the taint in a giver.
Malā ve pāpakā dhammā, asmiṃ loke paramhi ca. Taints, indeed, are all evil things, both in this world and the next.
243. 243.
Tato malā malataraṃ, avijjā paramaṃ malaṃ; A worse taint than these is ignorance, the worst of all taints.
Etaṃ malaṃ pahantvāna, nimmalā hotha bhikkhavo. Destroy this one taint and become taintless, O monks!
244. 244.
Sujīvaṃ ahirikena, kākasūrena dhaṃsinā; Easy is life for the shameless one who is impudent as a crow,
Pakkhandinā pagabbhena, saṃkiliṭṭhena jīvitaṃ. is backbiting and forward, arrogant and corrupt.
245. 245.
Hirīmatā ca dujjīvaṃ, niccaṃ sucigavesinā; Difficult is life for the modest one who always seeks purity,
Alīnenāppagabbhena, suddhājīvena passatā. is detached and unassuming, clean in life, and discerning.
246. 246-247.
Yo pāṇamatipāteti, musāvādañca bhāsati; One who destroys life, utters lies,
Loke adinnamādiyati, paradārañca gacchati. takes what is not given, goes to another man's wife,

Surāmerayapānañca, yo naro anuyuñjati; and is addicted to intoxicating drinks —
Idhevameso lokasmiṃ, mūlaṃ khaṇati attano. such a man digs up his own root even in this world.
248. 248.
Evaṃ bho purisa jānāhi, pāpadhammā asaññatā; Know this, O good man: evil things are difficult to control.
Mā taṃ lobho adhammo ca, ciraṃ dukkhāya randhayuṃ. Let not greed and wickedness drag you to protracted misery.
249. 249.
Dadāti ve yathāsaddhaṃ, yathāpasādanaṃ [yattha pasādanaṃ (katthaci)] jano; People give according to their faith or regard.
Tattha yo maṅku bhavati [tattha ce maṃku yo hoti (sī.), tattha yo maṅkuto hoti (syā.)], paresaṃ pānabhojane; If one becomes discontented with the food and drink given by others,
Na so divā vā rattiṃ vā, samādhimadhigacchati. one does not attain meditative absorption, either by day or by night.
250. 250.
Yassa cetaṃ samucchinnaṃ, mūlaghaccaṃ [mūlaghacchaṃ (ka.)] samūhataṃ; But he in who this (discontent) is fully destroyed, uprooted and extinct,
Sa ve divā vā rattiṃ vā, samādhimadhigacchati. he attains absorption, both by day and by night.
251. 251.
Natthi rāgasamo aggi, natthi dosasamo gaho; There is no fire like lust; there is no grip like hatred;
Natthi mohasamaṃ jālaṃ, natthi taṇhāsamā nadī. there is no net like delusion; there is no river like craving.
252. 252.
Sudassaṃ vajjamaññesaṃ, attano pana duddasaṃ; Easily seen is the fault of others, but one's own fault is difficult to see.
Paresaṃ hi so vajjāni, opunāti [ophunāti (ka.)] yathā bhusaṃ; Like chaff one winnows another's faults,
Attano pana chādeti, kaliṃva kitavā saṭho. but hides one's own, even as a crafty fowler hides behind sham branches.
253. 253.
Paravajjānupassissa, niccaṃ ujjhānasaññino; He who seeks another's faults, who is ever censorious —
Āsavā tassa vaḍḍhanti, ārā so āsavakkhayā. his cankers grow. He is far from destruction of the cankers.
254. 254.
Ākāseva padaṃ natthi, samaṇo natthi bāhire; There is no track in the sky, and no recluse outside (the Buddha's dispensation).
Papañcābhiratā pajā, nippapañcā tathāgatā. Mankind delights in worldliness, but the Buddhas are free from worldliness. [19]
255. 255.
Ākāseva padaṃ natthi, samaṇo natthi bāhire; There is no track in the sky, and no recluse outside (the Buddha's dispensation).
Saṅkhārā sassatā natthi, natthi buddhānamiñjitaṃ. There are no conditioned things that are eternal, and no instability in the Buddhas.
Malavaggo aṭṭhārasamo niṭṭhito.
