1.
Tirokuṭṭesu tiṭṭhanti, sandhisiṅghāṭakesu ca; They stand beyond the walls, and at the junctions and crossroads, 1. Without the walls they stand and wait, And at the junctions and road-forks; Они стоят за стенами, у пересечения дорог, на перекрёстках
Dvārabāhāsu tiṭṭhanti, āgantvāna sakaṃ gharaṃ. they stand at the door-posts, having come to their former homes. Returning to their erstwhile homes, They wait beside the jambs of gates. они стоят у дверных столбов, придя к своим [бывшим] домам.

Pahūte annapānamhi, khajjabhojje upaṭṭhite; But when abundant food and drink, both staple and non-staple, is prepared, 2. But when a rich feast is set out With food and drink of every kind, Но когда приготовлена обильная еда и питьё, основные и не основные блюда
Na tesaṃ koci sarati, sattānaṃ kammapaccayā. no one remembers these beings, because of their past unwholesome deeds, The fact that no man does recall These creatures stems from their past acts. никто не вспоминает тех существ по причине их [прошлых дурных] поступков.

Evaṃ dadanti ñātīnaṃ, ye honti anukampakā; Thus those who are compassionate give to their departed relatives, 3. So they who are compassionate At heart do give for relatives Поэтому те, кто обладает состраданием, подают своим [ушедшим] родственникам
Suciṃ paṇītaṃ kālena, kappiyaṃ pānabhojanaṃ; at the right time, pure, excellent, suitable drink and food. Such drink and food as may be pure And good and fitting at these times: чистое, прекрасное, подходящее питьё и еду в нужное время.
Idaṃ vo ñātīnaṃ hotu, sukhitā hontu ñātayo. Thinking: “May this go to our relatives, may our relatives be happy!” 4. ' Then let this be for relatives;' May relatives have happiness.' [Думая:] "Пусть это пойдёт нашим родственникам, пусть наши родственники будут счастливы!".

Te ca tattha samāgantvā, ñātipetā samāgatā; Those who have gathered, the departed relatives who have assembled These ghosts of the departed kin Foregathered and assembled there Те, кто пришёл, те родственники, ставшие [голодными] духами, собравшиеся
Pahūte annapānamhi, sakkaccaṃ anumodare. around the food and drink, respectfully offer their thanks: 5. Will eagerly their blessing give For [plentiful] rich food and drink: вокруг еды и напитков, искренне благодарят (делятся радостью)

Ciraṃ jīvantu no ñātī, yesaṃ hetu labhāmase; saying: “ May our relatives live long! Those to whom we owe this gain, ' So may our relatives live long,' Owing to whom we have this gain; [говоря:] "Пусть наши родственники живут долго, по причине которых мы получаем [этот дар].
Amhākañca katā pūjā, dāyakā ca anipphalā. for we have been honoured, those who give are not without reward!” 6. For honour to us has been done,' No giver ever lacked the fruit.' И нам оказали почтение и дарители без плода не остались.

Na hi tattha kasi [kasī (sī.)] atthi, gorakkhettha na vijjati; For in that place there is no ploughing, and cattle-rearing is not found there, Now there is never ploughing there, Nor any cattle-herding found, Ведь нет там земледелия и скотоводства там тоже не найти
Vaṇijjā tādisī natthi, hiraññena kayokayaṃ [kayākkayaṃ (sī.), kayā kayaṃ (syā.)] ; similarly there is no trading, or buying and selling of gold. 7. Nor merchandizing just the same, Nor bartering for coin of gold: и точно так же нет там торговли, нет продажи и покупки в обмен на золото.
Ito dinnena yāpenti, petā kālaṅkatā [kālakatā (sī. syā. kaṃ.)] tahiṃ. The departed in that place who have died, have to subsist on gifts. The ghosts of the departed kin Live there on giving given here; Там скончавшиеся в форме голодных духов живут тем, что здесь даётся.

Unname udakaṃ vuṭṭhaṃ, yathā ninnaṃ pavattati; Just as water that rains on the highlands, flows down to the lowlands, 8. As water showered on the hill Flows down to reach the hollow vale, Как вода, проливающаяся на возвышенность стекает в низину
Evameva ito dinnaṃ, petānaṃ upakappati. so too what has been given here is of benefit to the departed. So giving given here can serve The ghosts of the departed kin. так и то, что дано здесь, приносит благо голодным духам.

Yathā vārivahā pūrā, paripūrenti sāgaraṃ; Just as rivers that are full flow and fill up the ocean, 9. As river-beds when full can bear The water down to fill the sea, Как полноводные реки наполняют океан
Evameva ito dinnaṃ, petānaṃ upakappati. so too what has been given here is of benefit to the departed. So giving given here can serve The ghosts of the departed kin. так и то, что дано здесь, приносит благо голодным духам.
9.
Adāsi me akāsi me, ñātimittā [ñāti mitto (?)] sakhā ca me; Thinking: “He gave to me, he worked for me, he was my relative, my friend, my companion,” 10. ' He gave to me, he worked for me,' He was my kin, friend, intimate [Думая:] "Он давал мне [вещи], он работал для меня, он был моим родственником, моим другом, моим партнёром"
Petānaṃ dakkhiṇaṃ dajjā, pubbe katamanussaraṃ. he should give gifts for the departed, remembering what they have done before. Give gifts, then, for departed ones,Recalling what they used to do. пусть он совершает дары голодным духам, помня что они сделали для него в прошлом.
10.
Na hi ruṇṇaṃ vā soko vā, yā caññā paridevanā; For no tears, or grief, or any other lamentations, 11. No weeping, nor yet sorrowing, Nor any kind of mourning, Ведь ни слёзы, ни печаль, ни другие причитания
Na taṃ petānamatthāya, evaṃ tiṭṭhanti ñātayo. are of any use to the departed, as long as their relatives continue grieving in this way. aids Departed Ones, whose kin remain [Unhelpful to them acting] thus. не приносят пользы голодным духам пока их родственники продолжают так [горевать].
11.
Ayañca kho dakkhiṇā dinnā, saṅghamhi suppatiṭṭhitā; But that gift that has been given, and well placed in the Sangha, 12. But when this offering is given Well placed in the Community For them, Но тот дар, что был сделан и хорошо помещён в Сангхе
Dīgharattaṃ hitāyassa, ṭhānaso upakappati. is of benefit to them for a long time, immediately it is of benefit. then it can serve them long In future and at once as well. приносит им благо надолго, немедленно приносит пользу.

So ñātidhammo ca ayaṃ nidassito, petāna pūjā ca katā uḷārā; This then is the definition of a relative’s duties— and by this great honour has been done to the departed, 13. The True Idea for relatives has thus been shown, And how high honour to departed ones is done, Так долг родственников этим объяснён и тем голодным духам [умерших] оказано огромное почтение.
Balañca bhikkhūnamanuppadinnaṃ [… manuppadinnavā (ka.)], tumhehi puññaṃ pasutaṃ anappakanti. strength has also been given to the monks, and no little merit has been produced by you! And how the bhikkhus can be given strength as well, And how great merit can be stored away by you. И также монахам была дана сила, а вами накоплена немалая заслуга.
Tirokuṭṭasuttaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ.
