36.Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā antarā ca ukkaṭṭhaṃ antarā ca setabyaṃ addhānamaggappaṭipanno hoti. On one occasion the Blessed One was traveling along the road between Ukkattha and Setabya,
Doṇopi sudaṃ brāhmaṇo antarā ca ukkaṭṭhaṃ antarā ca setabyaṃ addhānamaggappaṭipanno hoti. and Dona the brahman was also traveling along the road between Ukkattha and Setabya.
Addasā kho doṇo brāhmaṇo bhagavato pādesu cakkāni sahassārāni sanemikāni sanābhikāni sabbākāraparipūrāni; disvānassa etadahosi – "acchariyaṃ vata, bho, abbhutaṃ vata, bho! Dona the brahman saw, in the Blessed One's footprints, wheels with 1,000 spokes, together with rims and hubs, complete in all their features. On seeing them, the thought occurred to him, "How amazing! How astounding!
Na vatimāni manussabhūtassa padāni bhavissantī"ti!! These are not the footprints of a human being! "
Atha kho bhagavā maggā okkamma aññatarasmiṃ rukkhamūle nisīdi pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. Then the Blessed One, leaving the road, went to sit at the root of a certain tree — his legs crossed, his body erect, with mindfulness established to the fore.
Atha kho doṇo brāhmaṇo bhagavato padāni anugacchanto addasa bhagavantaṃ aññatarasmiṃ rukkhamūle nisinnaṃ pāsādikaṃ pasādanīyaṃ santindriyaṃ santamānasaṃ uttamadamathasamathamanuppattaṃ dantaṃ guttaṃ saṃyatindriyaṃ [yatindriyaṃ (mahāva. 257)] nāgaṃ. Then Dona, following the Blessed One's footprints, saw him sitting at the root of the tree: confident, inspiring confidence, his senses calmed, his mind calmed, having attained the utmost control & tranquility, tamed, guarded, his senses restrained, a naga.
Disvāna yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – On seeing him, he went to him and said,

'Yakkho no bhavaṃ bhavissatī'ti, iti puṭṭho samāno – 'na kho ahaṃ, brāhmaṇa, yakkho bhavissāmī'ti vadesi. When asked, 'Are you a yakkha? ' you answer, 'No, brahman, I am not a yakkha.'
'Manusso no bhavaṃ bhavissatī'ti, iti puṭṭho samāno – 'na kho ahaṃ, brāhmaṇa, manusso bhavissāmī'ti vadesi. When asked, 'Are you a human being? ' you answer, 'No, brahman, I am not a human being.'
Atha ko carahi bhavaṃ bhavissatī"ti? Then what sort of being are you? "
"Yesaṃ kho ahaṃ, brāhmaṇa, āsavānaṃ appahīnattā devo bhaveyyaṃ, te me āsavā pahīnā ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṃkatā āyatiṃ anuppādadhammā. "Brahman, the fermentations by which — if they were not abandoned — I would be a deva: Those are abandoned by me, their root destroyed, made like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, not destined for future arising.
Yesaṃ kho ahaṃ, brāhmaṇa, āsavānaṃ appahīnattā gandhabbo bhaveyyaṃ… yakkho bhaveyyaṃ… manusso bhaveyyaṃ, te me āsavā pahīnā ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṃkatā āyatiṃ anuppādadhammā. The fermentations by which — if they were not abandoned — I would be a gandhabba... a yakkha... a human being: Those are abandoned by me, their root destroyed, made like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, not destined for future arising.
Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, uppalaṃ vā padumaṃ vā puṇḍarīkaṃ vā udake jātaṃ udake saṃvaḍḍhaṃ udakā accuggamma tiṭṭhati anupalittaṃ udakena; evamevaṃ kho ahaṃ, brāhmaṇa, loke jāto loke saṃvaḍḍho lokaṃ abhibhuyya viharāmi anupalitto lokena. "Just like a red, blue, or white lotus — born in the water, grown in the water, rising up above the water — stands unsmeared by the water, in the same way I — born in the world, grown in the world, having overcome the world — live unsmeared by the world.
Buddhoti maṃ, brāhmaṇa, dhārehī"ti. Remember me, brahman, as 'awakened.'
"Yena devūpapatyassa, gandhabbo vā vihaṅgamo; "The fermentations by which I would go to a deva-state, or become a gandhabba in the sky,
Yakkhattaṃ yena gaccheyyaṃ, manussattañca abbaje; or go to a yakkha-state & human-state:
Te mayhaṃ, āsavā khīṇā, viddhastā vinaḷīkatā. Those have been destroyed by me, ruined, their stems removed.
"Puṇḍarīkaṃ yathā vaggu, toyena nupalippati [nupalimpati (ka.)] ; Like a blue lotus, rising up, unsmeared by water,
Nupalippāmi [nupalimpāmi (ka.)] lokena, tasmā buddhosmi brāhmaṇā"ti. chaṭṭhaṃ; unsmeared am I by the world, and so, brahman, I'm awake."
