6."Bhante nāgasena, 'meghassa pañca aṅgāni gahetabbānī'ti yaṃ vadesi, katamāni tāni pañca aṅgāni gahetabbānī"ti?
“Revered Nāgasena, when you say five qualities of the raincloud must be adopted, which are these five qualities that must be adopted?
‘Venerable Nāgasena, those five qualities of the rain you say he ought to take, which are they?’
"Yathā, mahārāja, megho uppannaṃ rajojallaṃ vūpasameti, evameva kho, mahārāja, yoginā yogāvacarena uppannaṃ kilesarajojallaṃ vūpasametabbaṃ.
“As, sire, the rain-cloud allays dust and dirt that are arising, even so, sire, the one who is devoted to mental training must allay the dust and dirt of the defilements that are arising.
‘Just, O king, as the rain lays any dust that arises; just so, O king, should the strenuous Bhikshu, earnest in effort, lay the dust and dirt of any evil dispositions that may arise within him.
Idaṃ, mahārāja, meghassa paṭhamaṃ aṅgaṃ gahetabbaṃ.
This, sire, is the first quality of the rain-cloud that must be adopted.
This, O king, is the first quality of the rain he ought to have.
"Puna caparaṃ, mahārāja, megho pathaviyā uṇhaṃ nibbāpeti, evameva kho, mahārāja, yoginā yogāvacarena mettābhāvanāya sadevako loko nibbāpetabbo.
“And again, sire, the rain-cloud cools the heat of the earth; even so, sire, the one who is devoted to mental training must cool the world with the devas by the meditation of loving kindness.
‘And again, O king, just as the rain allays the heat of the ground; just so, O king, should the strenuous Bhikshu, earnest in effort, soothe the whole world of gods and men, with the feeling of his love.
Idaṃ, mahārāja, meghassa dutiyaṃ aṅgaṃ gahetabbaṃ.
This, sire, is the second quality of the rain-cloud that must be adopted.
This, O king, is the second quality of the rain he ought to have.
"Puna caparaṃ, mahārāja, megho sabbabījāni viruhāpeti, evameva kho, mahārāja, yoginā yogāvacarena sabbasattānaṃ saddhaṃ uppādetvā taṃ saddhābījaṃ tīsu sampattīsu ropetabbaṃ, dibbamānusikāsu sukhasampattīsu yāvaparamatthanibbānasukhasampatti.
“And again, sire, the rain-cloud makes all seeds grow; even so, sire, the one who is devoted to mental training, having in all beings generated faith, should sow the seed of faith for (achieving) the three attainments: the blissful deva and human attainments and the attainment of the bliss of Nibbāna, the ultimate goal.
‘And again, O king, as the rain makes all kinds of vegetation to grow; just so, O king, should the strenuous Bhikshu, earnest in effort, cause faith to spring up in all beings, and make that seed of faith grow up into the three Attainments, not only the lesser attainments of glorious rebirths in heaven or on earth, but also the attainment of the highest good, the bliss of Arahatship.
Idaṃ, mahārāja, meghassa tatiyaṃ aṅgaṃ gahetabbaṃ.
This, sire, is the third quality of the raincloud that must be adopted.
This, O king, is the third quality of the rain he ought to have.
"Puna caparaṃ, mahārāja, megho ututo samuṭṭhahitvā dharaṇitalaruhe tiṇarukkhalatāgumbaosadhivanappatayo parirakkhati, evameva kho, mahārāja, yoginā yogāvacarena yoniso manasikāraṃ nibbattetvā tena yoniso manasikārena samaṇadhammo parirakkhitabbo, yoniso manasikāramūlakā sabbe kusalā dhammā.
“And again, sire, a rain-cloud, arising in due season, preserves the base of the dharaṇīruha (tree), the grasses, trees, creepers, bushes, medicinal plants and forest-trees; even so, sire, the one who is devoted to mental training, having produced proper attention, must, by means of that proper attention, preserve the Dhamma of recluses, so that all wholesome states are rooted in proper attention.
‘And again, O king, just as the rain-cloud, rising up in the hot season, affords protection to the grass, and trees, and creepers, and shrubs, and medicinal herbs, and to the monarchs of the woods that grow on the surface of the earth; just so, O king, should the strenuous Bhikshu, earnest in effort, cultivating the habit of thoughtfulness, afford protection by his thoughtfulness to his condition of Samanaship, for in thoughtfulness is it that all good qualities have their root.
Idaṃ, mahārāja, meghassa catutthaṃ aṅgaṃ gahetabbaṃ.
This, sire, is the fourth quality of the rain-cloud that must be adopted.
This, O king, is the fourth quality of the rain he ought to have.
"Puna caparaṃ, mahārāja, megho vassamāno naditaḷākapokkharaṇiyo kandarapadarasarasobbhaudapānāni ca paripūreti udakadhārāhi, evameva kho, mahārāja, yoginā yogāvacarena āgamapariyattiyā dhammameghamabhivassayitvā adhigamakāmānaṃ mānasaṃ paripūrayitabbaṃ.
“And again, sire, the rain-cloud in raining down fills rivers, reservoirs, lotus-ponds and gullies, crevices, lakes, water-pools and wells with showers of water; even so, sire, the one who is devoted to mental training, having rained down the rain-cloud of Dhamma by his mastery of the scriptural tradition, should fill the minds (of others) with the spiritual realizations they are longing for.175
‘And again, O king, as the rain when it pours down fills the rivers, and reservoirs, and artificial lakes, the caves, and chasms, and ponds, and holes, and wells, with water; just so, O king, should the strenuous Bhikshu, earnest in effort, pour down the rain of the Dhamma—according to the texts handed down by tradition, and so fill to satisfaction the mind of those who are longing for instruction.
Idaṃ, mahārāja, meghassa pañcamaṃ aṅgaṃ gahetabbaṃ.
This, sire, is the fifth quality of the rain-cloud that must be adopted.”
This, O king, is the fifth quality of the rain he ought to have.
Bhāsitampetaṃ, mahārāja, therena sāriputtena dhammasenāpatinā –
For it was said, O king, by Sāriputta, the Elder, the Commander of the Faith:
Ведь есть, государь, изречение тхеры Шарипутры, полководца Учения:
"'Bodhaneyyaṃ janaṃ disvā, satasahassepi yojane;
“When the Great Sage perceives a man afar, Were it a hundred or a thousand leagues, Ripe for enlightenment,
«В неоглядной заметив дали Человека, духовно готового,
Khaṇena upagantvāna, bodheti taṃ mahāmunī"'ti.
straightway he goes And guides him gently to the path of Truth.” ’
