7.Rājā āha "bhante nāgasena, kataraṃ nu kho bahutaraṃ puññaṃ vā apuññaṃ vā"ti?
|
King Milinda said: “Revered Nāgasena, which is the greater, merit or demerit?"
|
The king said: ‘Which, Nāgasena, is there more of, merit or demerit?’
|
Царь молвил: «Почтенный Нагасена, что больше – достойное или недостойное290?»

"Puññaṃ kho, mahārāja, bahutaraṃ, apuññaṃ thoka"nti.
|
“Merit, sire, is the greater, demerit is a trifle.”
|
‘Merit.’
|
– Достойное больше, государь, недостойное меньше.
|
|
"Kena kāraṇenā"ti?
|
“In what way?"
|
‘But why?’
|
– Почему же?
|
|
"Apuññaṃ kho, mahārāja, karonto vippaṭisārī hoti 'pāpakammaṃ mayā kata'nti, tena pāpaṃ na vaḍḍhati.
|
“Sire, someone doing demerit is remorseful and says, ‘An evil deed was done by me.’ Therefore evil does not increase.
|
‘He who does wrong, O king, comes to feel remorse, and acknowledges his evil-doing. So demerit does not increase.
|
– Совершающий недостойное раскаивается в том, что совершил грех, и потому, государь, грех не растет.
|
|
Puññaṃ kho, mahārāja, karonto avippaṭisārī hoti, avippaṭisārino pāmojjaṃ jāyati, pamuditassa pīti jāyati, pītimanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaṃ vedeti, sukhino cittaṃ samādhiyati, samāhito yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, tena kāraṇena puññaṃ vaḍḍhati.
|
But someone doing merit is not remorseful. From absence of remorse rapture is born, joy is born of rapture. The body of one who is joyful is tranquil. When the body is tranquil, he experiences happiness. The mind of one who is happy is concentrated, and he who is concentrated comprehends as it really is. In this way merit increases.”
|
But he who does well feels no remorse, and feeling no remorse gladness will spring up within him, and joy will arise to him thus gladdened, and so rejoicing all his frame will be at peace, and being thus at peace he will experience a blissful feeling of content, and in that bliss his heart will be at rest, and he whose heart is thus at rest knows things as they really are. For that reason merit increases.

Совершающий же достойное, государь, не раскаивается, раз нет раскаяния, то является веселость, от веселости является радость, от радости тело291 становится надежным, от надежности тела ощущается приятное, у ощущающего приятное мысль сосредоточивается, сосредоточенный постигает то, что есть292, поэтому достойное растет.

Puriso kho, mahārāja, chinnahatthapādo bhagavato ekaṃ uppalahatthaṃ datvā ekanavutikappāni vinipātaṃ na gacchissati.

A man, for example, though his hands and feet are cut off, if he gave to the Blessed One merely a handful of lotuses, would not enter purgatory for ninety-one Kalpas.

Да ведь если человек с усеченными ступнями и кистями рук подаст Блаженному стебелек лотоса, то он девяносто одну кальпу не попадет в преисподнюю293,

Imināpi, mahārāja, kāraṇena bhaṇāmi 'puññaṃ bahutaraṃ, apuññaṃ thoka"'nti.
|
|
That is why I said, O king, that there is more merit than demerit.’
|
потому я и говорю, что достойное больше, недостойное меньше.
|

"Kallosi, bhante nāgasenā"ti.
|
“You are dexterous, revered Nāgasena.”
|
‘Very good, Nāgasena!’
|
