King Milinda said: “Revered Nāgasena, is cessation Nibbāna?"

"Āma, mahārāja, nirodho nibbāna"nti.
|
“Yes, sire, cessation is Nibbāna.”

– Да, государь, покой – это пресечение.

"Kathaṃ, bhante, nāgasena, nirodho nibbāna"nti?
|
“How, revered sir, is cessation Nibbāna?"

– Каким образом, почтенный Нагасена, покой – это пресечение?

"Sabbe bālaputhujjanā kho, mahārāja, ajjhattikabāhire āyatane abhinandanti abhivadanti ajjhosāya tiṭṭhanti, te tena sotena vuyhanti, na parimuccanti jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokena paridevena dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi na parimuccanti dukkhasmāti vadāmi.

“All those foolish worldlings, sire, who rejoice in the inner and outer sense bases, approve of them and cleave to them, are carried away by that stream; they are not utterly free from birth, old age and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair; they are not, I say, utterly free from suffering.

– Все глупые люди-из-толпы, государь, к источникам и каналам приваживаются, прилепляются, пристращаются; уносит их этим потоком, не освобождаются они от рождения, старости со смертью, печали, стенаний, боли, уныния, отчаяния. Поэтому я говорю: они не освобождаются от тяготы.

Sutavā ca kho, mahārāja, ariyasāvako ajjhattikabāhire āyatane nābhinandati nābhivadati nājjhosāya tiṭṭhati, tassa taṃ anabhinandato anabhivadato anajjhosāya tiṭṭhato taṇhā nirujjhati, taṇhānirodhā upādānanirodho, upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho, bhavanirodhā jātinirodho, jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇaṃ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti, evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti, evaṃ kho, mahārāja, nirodho nibbāna"nti.

But, sire, the instructed noble disciple does not rejoice in the inner and outer sense bases, does not approve of them or cleave to them. For him, not rejoicing in them, not approving of them or cleaving to them, craving ceases; from the cessation of craving is the cessation of clinging; from the cessation of clinging is the cessation of becoming; from the cessation of becoming is the cessation of birth; from the cessation of birth, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair cease. Thus is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering. In this way, sire, cessation is Nibbāna.”

Просвещенный же арийский слушатель, государь, к источникам и каналам не приваживается, не прилепляется, не пристращается. А раз он к ним не приваживается, не прилепляется, ни пристращается, то жажда его пресекается, от пресечения жажды – пресечение привязанности; от пресечения привязанности – пресечение существования; от пресечения существования – пресечение рождения; от пресечения рождения – пресечение старости со смертью; пресекаются печаль, стенания, боль, уныние, отчаяние. Так идет пресечение всего этого множества тягот243.
