11."Bhante nāgasena, kiṃlakkhaṇā cetanā"ti?
King Milinda said: “Revered Nāgasena, what is the distinguishing mark of volition?"
‘What is the distinguishing characteristic, Nāgasena, of the conceived purpose (cetanā)?’
"Cetayitalakkhaṇā, mahārāja, cetanā abhisaṅkharaṇalakkhaṇā cā"ti.
“Being willed, sire, is a distinguishing mark of volition and effective preparation is also a distinguishing mark.”
‘The being conceived, O king, and the being prepared.’
"Opammaṃ karohī"ti.
“Make a simile.”
‘Give me an illustration.’
"Yathā, mahārāja, kocideva puriso visaṃ abhisaṅkharitvā attanā ca piveyya, pare ca pāyeyya, so attanāpi dukkhito bhaveyya, parepi dukkhitā bhaveyyuṃ.
“Suppose, sire, some man has prepared poison and were to drink it himself or make others drink it—either he or the others would become afflicted.
‘It is like the case of a man, O king, who should prepare poison, and both drink of it himself, and give of it to others to drink. He himself would suffer pain, and so would they.
Evameva kho, mahārāja, idhekacco puggalo akusalaṃ kammaṃ cetanāya cetayitvā kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjeyya.
Even so, sire, some man here, having through volition willed an unwholesome deed, would arise, after death, in a bad bourn, and those who follow his example also arise, after death, in a bad bourn.
In the same way some individual, having thought out with intention some evil deed, on the dissolution of the body after death, would be reborn into some unhappy state of woe in purgatory,

Yepi tassa anusikkhanti, tepi kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjanti.

and so also would those who followed his advice.

"Yathā vā pana, mahārāja, kocideva puriso sappinavanītatelamadhuphāṇitaṃ ekajjhaṃ abhisaṅkharitvā attanā ca piveyya, pare ca pāyeyya, so attanā sukhito bhaveyya, parepi sukhitā bhaveyyuṃ.

—And it is like the case of a man, O king, who should prepare a mixture of ghee, butter, oil, honey and molasses, and should both drink thereof himself and give of it to others to drink. He himself would have pleasure, and so would they.

Evameva kho, mahārāja, idhekacco puggalo kusalaṃ kammaṃ cetanāya cetayitvā kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjati.

In the same way some individual, having thought out with intention some good deed, will be reborn, on the dissolution of the body after death, into some happy state of bliss in heaven,

Thus is it, great king, that the being conceived, and the being prepared, are marks of the conceived purpose.’
"Kallosi, bhante nāgasenā"ti.
“You are dexterous, revered Nāgasena.”
‘Very good, Nāgasena!’
