Evaṃ imināpi pañhabyākaraṇena āraddhacitto satthā purimanayeneva uttariṃ pañhaṃ pucchati "cha nāma ki"nti? 29. So the teacher, being satisfied with the answer to his question, asked the further question Six is what? in the same manner as before.
Thero chaiti paccanubhāsitvā 'ajjhattikāni āyatanānī'ti vissajjeti. 30. Responding to [the number] ‘ six ’ the Elder replied Six bases in oneself.
Tattha chaiti gaṇanaparicchedo, ajjhatte niyuttāni, attānaṃ vā adhikatvā pavattāni ajjhattikāni. 31. Herein, six (cha) is the delimitation by number. They are connected in what has to do with oneself ( ajjhatte niyuttani: cf. Panini, iv. 4, 69) and occur in subordination to self (attanam adhiJcatvd pavattani), thus they are in-oneself (ajjhattika).
Āyatanato, āyassa vā tananato, āyatassa vā saṃsāradukkhassa nayanato āyatanāni, cakkhusotaghānajivhākāyamanānametaṃ adhivacanaṃ. They are bases (ayatanani) because of actuating (ayatanato), because of being the range of the origin (ayassa tananato ), and because of leading on the actuated (ayatassa... nayanato) suffering of the round [of rebirths].24 This is a designation for eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind.
Pubbanayena cettha "cha ajjhattikāni āyatanānī"ti vuttaṃ, na aññesaṃ channamabhāvato. 32. And ‘ six bases in oneself ’ is stated here in the way already given (§§ 6, 13), not because of the absence of other sixes,
Yathāha – according as it is said
"Chasu, bhikkhave, dhammesu bhikkhu sammā nibbindamāno - pe - dukkhassantakaro hoti. ‘ Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu becomes completely dispassionate towards six ideas, ... he is one who makes an end [of suffering here and now].
Katamesu chasu? What six?
Chasu ajjhattikesu āyatanesu. The six bases in oneself:
Imesu kho, bhikkhave, chasu dhammesu bhikkhu sammā nibbindamāno - pe - dukkhassantakaro hoti. when a bhikkhu becomes completely dispassionate towards these six ideas, ... he is one who makes an end [of suffering here and now].
'Cha pañhā cha uddesā cha veyyākaraṇānī'ti iti yaṃ taṃ vuttaṃ, idametaṃ paṭicca vutta"nti (a. ni. 10.27). So it was with reference to this that it w as said [earlier:] six questions, six indications, six answers ’ (A. v. 52).
Ettha ca cha ajjhattikāni āyatanāni, "suñño gāmoti kho, bhikkhave, channetaṃ ajjhattikānaṃ āyatanānaṃ adhivacana"nti (saṃ. ni. 4.238) vacanato suññato pubbuḷakamarīcikādīni viya aciraṭṭhitikato tucchato vañcanato ca samanupassaṃ nibbindamāno anupubbena dukkhassantaṃ katvā maccurājassa adassanaṃ upeti. 33. And one who comes to. dispassion by seeing [them] as void because of the words ‘ “ Void village ”, bhikkhus, is a designation for the six bases in oneself’ ( S. iv. 174), [and by seeing them] as empty and deceptive because of their being as unlasting as bubbles, mirages, etc., eventually makes an end of suffering and passes beyond the vision of King Mortality,
Yathāha – according as it is said:
"Yathā pubbuḷakaṃ passe, yathā passe marīcikaṃ; ‘ And he that looks upon the world ‘ Regarding it as but a bubble,
Evaṃ lokaṃ avekkhantaṃ, maccurājā na passatī"ti. (dha. pa. 170); ‘ Regarding it as but a mirage, ‘ Is out of sight of Death the King ’ (Dh. 170).
