82.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
§82. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tayome, bhikkhave, devesu devasaddā niccharanti samayā samayaṃ upādāya.
“Monks, these three divine sounds sound forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.
Katame tayo?
Which three?
Yasmiṃ, bhikkhave, samaye ariyasāvako kesamassuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajjāya ceteti, tasmiṃ samaye [tasmiṃ bhikkhave samaye (pī. ka.)] devesu devasaddo niccharati – 'eso ariyasāvako mārena saddhiṃ saṅgāmāya cetetī'ti.
When a disciple of the noble ones, shaving off his hair & beard, clothing himself in the ochre robe, makes up his mind to go forth from the home life into homelessness, on that occasion the divine sound sounds forth among the devas: ‘This disciple of the noble ones has made up his mind to do battle with Māra.’
Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo devesu devasaddo niccharati samayā samayaṃ upādāya.
This is the first divine sound that sounds forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.
"Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, yasmiṃ samaye ariyasāvako sattannaṃ bodhipakkhiyānaṃ dhammānaṃ bhāvanānuyogamanuyutto viharati, tasmiṃ samaye devesu devasaddo niccharati – 'eso ariyasāvako mārena saddhiṃ saṅgāmetī'ti.
“When a disciple of the noble ones lives devoted to developing the seven [sets of] qualities that are wings to awakening,1 on that occasion the divine sound sounds forth among the devas: ‘This disciple of the noble ones is doing battle with Māra.’
Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, dutiyo devesu devasaddo niccharati samayā samayaṃ upādāya.
This is the second divine sound that sounds forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.
"Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, yasmiṃ samaye ariyasāvako āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati, tasmiṃ samaye devesu devasaddo niccharati – 'eso ariyasāvako vijitasaṅgāmo tameva saṅgāmasīsaṃ abhivijiya ajjhāvasatī'ti.
“When a disciple of the noble ones, through the ending of effluents, dwells in the effluent-free awareness-release & discernment-release, directly knowing & realizing it for himself right in the here-&-now, on that occasion the divine sound sounds forth among the devas: ‘This disciple of the noble ones has won the battle. Having been in the front lines of the battle, he now dwells victorious.’
Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, tatiyo devesu devasaddo niccharati samayā samayaṃ upādāya.
This is the third divine sound that sounds forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo devesu devasaddā niccharanti samayā samayaṃ upādāyā"ti.
“These are the three divine sounds that sound forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
[So with regard to this it was said:]
"Disvā vijitasaṅgāmaṃ, sammāsambuddhasāvakaṃ;
Seeing he’s won the battle –the disciple of the Rightly Self-awakened One–
Devatāpi namassanti, mahantaṃ vītasāradaṃ.
even the devas pay homage to this great one, thoroughly mature.
"Namo te purisājañña, yo tvaṃ dujjayamajjhabhū;
“Homage to you, O thoroughbred man– you who have won the hard victory,
Jetvāna maccuno senaṃ, vimokkhena anāvaraṃ.
defeating the army of Death, unhindered in emancipation.”
"Iti hetaṃ namassanti, devatā pattamānasaṃ;
Thus they pay homage, the devas, to one who has reached the heart’s goal,
Tañhi tassa na passanti, yena maccuvasaṃ vaje"ti.
for they see in him no means2 that would bring him under Death’s sway.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Tatiyaṃ.
