60.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
§60. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, puññakiriyavatthūni.
“Monks, there are these three grounds for meritorious activity.
Katamāni tīṇi?
Which three?
Dānamayaṃ puññakiriyavatthu, sīlamayaṃ puññakiriyavatthu, bhāvanāmayaṃ puññakiriyavatthu – imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi puññakiriyavatthūnī"ti.
The ground for meritorious activity made of generosity, the ground for meritorious activity made of virtue, and the ground for meritorious activity made of development [meditation]. These are the three grounds for meritorious activity.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
[So with regard to this it was said:]
"Puññameva so sikkheyya, āyataggaṃ sukhudrayaṃ;
Train in acts of merit that yield the foremost profit of bliss–
Dānañca samacariyañca, mettacittañca bhāvaye.
develop generosity, a life in tune, a mind of good will.
"Ete dhamme bhāvayitvā, tayo sukhasamuddaye;
Developing these three things that bring about bliss,
Abyāpajjhaṃ sukhaṃ lokaṃ, paṇḍito upapajjatī"ti.
the wise reappear in a world of bliss unalloyed.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Paṭhamaṃ.
