58.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
§58. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tisso imā, bhikkhave, taṇhā.
“Monks, there are these three cravings.
Katamā tisso?
Which three?
Kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā – imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso taṇhā"ti.
Craving for sensuality, craving for becoming, craving for non-becoming. These are the three cravings.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
[So with regard to this it was said:]
"Taṇhāyogena saṃyuttā, rattacittā bhavābhave;
Bound with the bondage of craving, their minds smitten with becoming & non-,
Te yogayuttā mārassa, ayogakkhemino janā;
they are bound with the bondage of Māra– people with no safety from bondage,
Sattā gacchanti saṃsāraṃ, jātīmaraṇagāmino.
beings going through the wandering-on, headed for birth & death.
"Ye ca taṇhaṃ pahantvāna, vītataṇhā [nikkaṇhā ca (sī. ka.)] bhavābhave;
While those who’ve abandoned craving, free from the craving for becoming & non-,
Te ve [te ca (sī. pī. ka.)] pāraṅgatā [pāragatā (ka. sī. syā.)] loke, ye pattā āsavakkhaya"nti.
reaching the ending of effluents, though in the world, have gone beyond.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Navamaṃ.
