56.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
§56. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tayome, bhikkhave, āsavā.
“Monks, there are these three effluents.
Katame tayo?
Which three?
Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavo – ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavā"ti.
The effluent of sensuality, the effluent of becoming, the effluent of ignorance. These are the three effluents.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
[So with regard to this it was said:]
"Samāhito sampajāno, sato buddhassa sāvako;
Centered, alert, mindful, the Awakened One’s disciple
Āsave ca pajānāti, āsavānañca sambhavaṃ.
discerns effluents, how effluents come into play,
"Yattha cetā nirujjhanti, maggañca khayagāminaṃ;
where they cease, & the path to their ending.
Āsavānaṃ khayā bhikkhu, nicchāto parinibbuto"ti.
With the ending of effluents, a monk free from hunger is totally unbound.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Sattamaṃ.
