39.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
§39. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa dve dhammadesanā pariyāyena bhavanti.
“Monks, the Tathāgata–worthy & rightly self-awakened–has two Dhamma discourses given in sequence.
Katamā dve?
Which two?
'Pāpaṃ pāpakato passathā'ti – ayaṃ paṭhamā dhammadesanā; 'pāpaṃ pāpakato disvā tattha nibbindatha virajjatha vimuccathā'ti – ayaṃ dutiyā dhammadesanā.
‘See evil as evil.’ This is the first Dhamma discourse. ‘Having seen evil as evil, become disenchanted there, dispassionate there, released.’ This is the second Dhamma discourse.
Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa imā dve dhammadesanā pariyāyena bhavantī"ti.
These are the two Dhamma discourses that the Tathāgata–worthy & rightly self-awakened–has given in sequence.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
[So with regard to this it was said:]
"Tathāgatassa buddhassa, sabbabhūtānukampino;
[by the Tathāgata, awakened, sympathetic to all beings.]
Pariyāyavacanaṃ passa, dve ca dhammā pakāsitā.
[See the two statements, declared in sequence,]
"Pāpakaṃ passatha cetaṃ [cekaṃ (sī. pī.), chekā (syā.)], tattha cāpi virajjatha;
The first: see evil. Be dispassionate there toward evil.
Tato virattacittāse, dukkhassantaṃ karissathā"ti.
Then, with a mind dispassionate, you will make an end of suffering & stress.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Dutiyaṃ.
