23.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ – §23. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Ekadhammo, bhikkhave, bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhigayha tiṭṭhati – diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṃ samparāyikañca. “This one quality, monks, when developed & pursued, keeps both kinds of benefit secure: benefit in this life & in lives to come.
Katamo ekadhammo? Which one quality?
Appamādo kusalesu dhammesu. Heedfulness with regard to skillful qualities.
Ayaṃ kho, bhikkhave, ekadhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhigayha tiṭṭhati – diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṃ samparāyikañcā"ti. This is the one quality that, when developed & pursued, keeps both kinds of benefit secure: benefit in this life & in lives to come.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca. [This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati – [So with regard to this it was said:]
"Appamādaṃ pasaṃsanti, puññakiriyāsu paṇḍitā; They praise heedfulness, the wise, in doing acts of merit.
Appamatto ubho atthe, adhigaṇhāti paṇḍito. When heedful, wise, you achieve both kinds of benefit:
"Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho, yo cattho samparāyiko; benefits in this life, & benefits in lives to come.
Atthābhisamayā dhīro, paṇḍitoti pavuccatī"ti. By breaking through to your benefit, you’re called enlightened, wise.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. [This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Tatiyaṃ.
