21.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ – §21. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Idhāhaṃ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṃ puggalaṃ pasannacittaṃ evaṃ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi – 'imamhi cāyaṃ samaye puggalo kālaṃ kareyya yathābhataṃ nikkhitto evaṃ sagge'. “Monks, there is the case where a certain person is clear-minded. Having encompassed that mind with [my] awareness, I discern, ‘If this person were to die at this instant, then as if he were to be carried off, he would thus be placed in heaven.’
Taṃ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Cittaṃ hissa, bhikkhave, pasannaṃ. Because his mind is clear.
Cetopasādahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evamidhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjantī"ti. It’s because of clear-mindedness that there are cases where some beings–at the break-up of the body, after death–reappear in a heavenly world.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca. [This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati – [So with regard to this it was said:]
"Pasannacittaṃ ñatvāna, ekaccaṃ idha puggalaṃ; Knowing the case of a clear-minded person,
Etamatthañca byākāsi, buddho bhikkhūna santike. the One Awakened explained its meaning in the presence of the monks.
"Imamhi cāyaṃ samaye, kālaṃ kayirātha puggalo; If that person were to die at this instant,
Sugatiṃ upapajjeyya, cittaṃ hissa pasāditaṃ. he’d reappear in heaven because his mind is clear–
"Yathā haritvā nikkhipeyya, evameva tathāvidho; as if he were carried off and placed there.
Cetopasādahetu hi, sattā gacchanti suggati"nti. It’s because of clear-mindedness that beings go to a good destination.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. [This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Paṭhamaṃ.
