59.Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī at Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā rattandhakāratimisāyaṃ abbhokāse nisinno hoti telappadīpesu jhāyamānesu.
|
Now on that occasion, in the pitch-black darkness of the night, the Blessed One was sitting in the open air while oil lamps were burning.
|
|
Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā adhipātakā tesu telappadīpesu āpātaparipātaṃ anayaṃ āpajjanti, byasanaṃ āpajjanti [natthi sīhaḷapotthake], anayabyasanaṃ āpajjanti [natthi sīhaḷapotthake].
|
And on that occasion, many flying insects, flying into & around those lamps, were meeting their downfall, meeting their misfortune, meeting their downfall & misfortune in those oil lamps.

|
Addasā kho bhagavā te sambahule adhipātake tesu telappadīpesu āpātaparipātaṃ anayaṃ āpajjante, byasanaṃ āpajjante, anayabyasanaṃ āpajjante.
|
The Blessed One saw those flying insects, flying into & around those lamps, meeting their downfall, meeting their misfortune, meeting their downfall & misfortune in those oil lamps.

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi –

Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
