33.Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kosalesu cārikaṃ carati mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ. | I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was wandering among the Kosalans with a large community of monks.
Atha kho bhagavā maggā okkamma yena aññataraṃ rukkhamūlaṃ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. | Then, coming down from the road, he went to a certain tree, and on arrival sat down on a seat laid out.
Atha kho aññataro gopālako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami ; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. | A certain cowherd then went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side.
Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho taṃ gopālakaṃ bhagavā dhammiyā kathāya sandassesi samādapesi [samādāpesi (?)] samuttejesi sampahaṃsesi. | As he was sitting there, the Blessed One, instructed, urged, roused, & encouraged him with Dhamma-talk.
Atha kho so gopālako bhagavatā dhammiyā kathāya sandassito samādapito [samādipito (?)] samuttejito sampahaṃsito bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – "adhivāsetu me, bhante, bhagavā svātanāya bhattaṃ saddhiṃ bhikkhusaṅghenā"ti. | The cowherd–instructed, urged, roused, & encouraged by the Blessed One’s talk on Dhamma–said to him, “Lord, may the Blessed One, together with the community of monks, acquiesce to my offer of tomorrow’s meal.”
Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena. | The Blessed One acquiesced with silence.
Atha kho so gopālako bhagavato adhivāsanaṃ viditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā pakkāmi. | Then the cowherd, understanding the Blessed One’s acquiescence, got up from his seat, bowed down to the Blessed One and left, circling him to the right.
Atha kho so gopālako tassā rattiyā accayena sake nivesane pahūtaṃ appodakapāyasaṃ [appodakapāyāsaṃ (sabbattha)] paṭiyādāpetvā navañca sappiṃ bhagavato kālaṃ ārocesi – "kālo, bhante, niṭṭhitaṃ bhatta"nti. | Then, after the night had passed, the cowherd–having prepared in his own home a great deal of thick milk-rice porridge & fresh ghee–announced the time of the meal to the Blessed One: “It’s time, lord. The meal is ready.”
Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya saddhiṃ bhikkhusaṅghena yena tassa gopālakassa nivesanaṃ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. | So the Blessed One early in the morning adjusted his under robe and–carrying his bowl & robes–went together with the community of monks to the cowherd’s home. On arrival, he sat down on a seat laid out.
Atha kho so gopālako buddhappamukhaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ appodakapāyasena [appodakapāyāsena ca (syā. pī.)] navena ca sappinā sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi. | The cowherd, with his own hand, served & satisfied the community of monks headed by the Blessed One with thick milk-rice porridge & fresh ghee.
Atha kho so gopālako bhagavantaṃ bhuttāviṃ onītapattapāṇiṃ aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. | Then, when the Blessed One had eaten and had rinsed his bowl & hands, the cowherd, taking a lower seat, sat down to one side.
Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho taṃ gopālakaṃ bhagavā dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṃsetvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi. | As he was sitting there, the Blessed One, instructed, urged, roused, & encouraged him with Dhamma-talk, then got up from his seat & left.
Atha kho acirapakkantassa bhagavato taṃ gopālakaṃ aññataro puriso sīmantarikāya jīvitā voropesi. | Now, not long after the Blessed One’s departure, the cowherd was killed by a certain man between the boundaries of two villages.
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. | A large number of monks then went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side.
Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – "yena, bhante, gopālakena ajja buddhappamukho bhikkhusaṅgho appodakapāyasena navena ca sappinā sahatthā santappito sampavārito so kira, bhante, gopālako aññatarena purisena sīmantarikāya jīvitā voropito"ti. | As they were sitting there, they told him, “The cowherd who today served & satisfied the community of monks headed by the Blessed One with thick milk-rice porridge & fresh ghee, has been killed, it is said, by a certain man between the boundaries of two villages.”
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – | Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
"Diso disaṃ yaṃ taṃ kayirā, verī vā pana verinaṃ; | Whatever an enemy might do to an enemy, or a foe to a foe, |
