16.Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī at Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
Tena kho pana samayena aññatarassa paribbājakassa daharamāṇavikā pajāpati hoti gabbhinī upavijaññā.
And on that occasion the young wife of a certain wanderer was pregnant and on the verge of delivery.
Atha kho sā paribbājikā taṃ paribbājakaṃ etadavoca – "gaccha tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, telaṃ āhara, yaṃ me vijātāya bhavissatī"ti.
So she said to the wanderer, “Go, brahman, get some oil for my delivery.”
Evaṃ vutte, so paribbājako taṃ paribbājikaṃ etadavoca – "kuto panāhaṃ, bhoti [bhotiyā (syā. pī. ka.)], telaṃ āharāmī"ti?
When this was said, the wanderer said to her, “But where can I get any oil?”
Dutiyampi kho sā paribbājikā taṃ paribbājakaṃ etadavoca – "gaccha tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, telaṃ āhara, yaṃ me vijātāya bhavissatī"ti.
A second time, she said to him, “Go, brahman, get some oil for my delivery.”

Tatiyampi kho sā paribbājikā taṃ paribbājakaṃ etadavoca – "gaccha tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, telaṃ āhara, yaṃ me vijātāya bhavissatī"ti.

A third time, she said to him, “Go, brahman get some oil for my delivery.”

Tena kho pana samayena rañño pasenadissa kosalassa koṭṭhāgāre samaṇassa vā brāhmaṇassa vā sappissa vā telassa vā yāvadatthaṃ pātuṃ dīyati [diyyati (sī. ka.)], no nīharituṃ.
Now on that occasion at the storehouse of King Pasenadi Kosala contemplatives & brahmans were being given as much oil or ghee as they needed to drink, but not to take away.
Atha kho tassa paribbājakassa etadahosi – "rañño kho pana pasenadissa kosalassa koṭṭhāgāre samaṇassa vā brāhmaṇassa vā sappissa vā telassa vā yāvadatthaṃ pātuṃ dīyati, no nīharituṃ.
So the thought occurred to the wanderer, “At present at the storehouse of King Pasenadi Kosala contemplatives & brahmans are being given as much oil or ghee as they need to drink, but not to take away.
Yaṃnūnāhaṃ rañño pasenadissa kosalassa koṭṭhāgāraṃ gantvā telassa yāvadatthaṃ pivitvā gharaṃ āgantvā ucchadditvāna [uggiritvāna (sī. syā. pī.), ucchaditvā (sī. syā. aṭṭha.), ucchaḍḍitvāna (ka.)] dadeyyaṃ, yaṃ imissā vijātāya bhavissatī"ti.
Suppose, having gone there, I were to drink as much oil as I need and, on returning home, vomiting it up, were to give it to use at this delivery?”
Atha kho so paribbājako rañño pasenadissa kosalassa koṭṭhāgāraṃ gantvā telassa yāvadatthaṃ pivitvā gharaṃ āgantvā neva sakkoti uddhaṃ kātuṃ, na pana adho.
So, having gone to the storehouse of King Pasenadi Kosala, he drank as much oil as he needed but, on returning home, was unable to bring it up or pass it down.
So dukkhāhi tibbāhi [tippāhi (syā.)] kharāhi kaṭukāhi vedanāhi phuṭṭho āvaṭṭati parivaṭṭati.
So he rolled back & forth, suffering from fierce pains, sharp & severe.
Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.
Then early in the morning the Blessed One adjusted his under robe and–carrying his bowl & robes–went into Sāvatthī for alms.
Addasā kho bhagavā taṃ paribbājakaṃ dukkhāhi tibbāhi kharāhi kaṭukāhi vedanāhi phuṭṭhaṃ āvaṭṭamānaṃ parivaṭṭamānaṃ.
He saw the wanderer rolling back & forth, suffering from fierce pains, sharp & severe.
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi –
Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
"Sukhino vata ye akiñcanā,
How blissful it is, for one who has nothing.
Vedaguno hi janā akiñcanā;
Attainers-of-wisdom are people with nothing.
Sakiñcanaṃ passa vihaññamānaṃ,
See him suffering, one who has something,
Jano janasmiṃ paṭibandhacitto" [paṭibaddhacitto (syā.), paṭibandharupo (?)] ti. chaṭṭhaṃ;
a person bound in mind with people.
