Appamādo amatapadaṃ [amataṃ padaṃ (ka.)], pamādo maccuno padaṃ;
Heedfulness is the path to the Deathless. Heedlessness is the path to death.
Appamattā na mīyanti, ye pamattā yathā matā.
The heedful die not. The heedless are as if dead already. [3]

Evaṃ [etaṃ (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)] visesato ñatvā, appamādamhi paṇḍitā;
Clearly understanding this excellence of heedfulness,
Appamāde pamodanti, ariyānaṃ gocare ratā.
the wise exult therein and enjoy the resort of the Noble Ones. [4]

Phusanti dhīrā nibbānaṃ, yogakkhemaṃ anuttaraṃ.
alone experience Nibbana, the incomparable freedom from bondage.

Uṭṭhānenappamādena, saṃyamena damena ca;
By effort and heedfulness, discipline and self-mastery,
Dīpaṃ kayirātha medhāvī, yaṃ ogho nābhikīrati.
let the wise one make for himself an island which no flood can overwhelm.

Pamādamanuyuñjanti, bālā dummedhino janā;
The foolish and ignorant indulge in heedlessness,
Appamādañca medhāvī, dhanaṃ seṭṭhaṃva rakkhati.
but the wise one keeps his heedfulness as his best treasure.

Mā pamādamanuyuñjetha, mā kāmaratisanthavaṃ [sandhavaṃ (ka)] ;
Do not give way to heedlessness. Do not indulge in sensual pleasures.
Appamatto hi jhāyanto, pappoti vipulaṃ sukhaṃ.
Only the heedful and meditative attain great happiness.

Pamādaṃ appamādena, yadā nudati paṇḍito;
even so when the wise man casts away heedlessness by heedfulness
Paññāpāsādamāruyha, asoko sokiniṃ pajaṃ;
and ascends the high tower of wisdom, this sorrowless sage beholds the sorrowing and foolish multitude.

Pabbataṭṭhova bhūmaṭṭhe [bhummaṭṭhe (sī. syā.)], dhīro bāle avekkhati.

Heedful among the heedless, wide-awake among the sleepy,

Abalassaṃva sīghasso, hitvā yāti sumedhaso.
the wise man advances like a swift horse leaving behind a weak jade.

By Heedfulness did Indra become the overlord of the gods.

Appamādaṃ pasaṃsanti, pamādo garahito sadā.

Heedfulness is ever praised, and heedlessness ever despised. [5]

The monk who delights in heedfulness and looks with fear at heedlessness
