Manopubbaṅgamā dhammā, manoseṭṭhā manomayā;
|
Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought.
|

Manasā ce paduṭṭhena, bhāsati vā karoti vā;
|
If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts
|
|
|
Tato naṃ dukkhamanveti, cakkaṃva vahato padaṃ.
|
suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox.

Tato naṃ sukhamanveti, chāyāva anapāyinī [anupāyinī (ka.)].
|
happiness follows him like his never-departing shadow.
|
|

Akkocchi maṃ avadhi maṃ, ajini [ajinī (?)] maṃ ahāsi me;
|
"He abused me, he struck me, he overpowered me, he robbed me."
|
|
|
Ye ca taṃ upanayhanti, veraṃ tesaṃ na sammati.
|
Those who harbor such thoughts do not still their hatred.
|
|
|

|
Akkocchi maṃ avadhi maṃ, ajini maṃ ahāsi me;
|
"He abused me, he struck me, he overpowered me, he robbed me."
|
|
|
Ye ca taṃ nupanayhanti, veraṃ tesūpasammati.
|
Those who do not harbor such thoughts still their hatred.
|
|

Na hi verena verāni, sammantīdha kudācanaṃ;
|
Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world.
|
|
|
Averena ca sammanti, esa dhammo sanantano.
|
By non-hatred alone is hatred appeased. This is a law eternal.
|
|
|

|
|
Pare ca na vijānanti, mayamettha yamāmase;
|
There are those who do not realize that one day we all must die.
|
|
|
Ye ca tattha vijānanti, tato sammanti medhagā.
|
But those who do realize this settle their quarrels.
|
|
|

|
|
Subhānupassiṃ viharantaṃ, indriyesu asaṃvutaṃ;
|
the man who lives for the pursuit of pleasures, who is uncontrolled in his senses,
|
|
|
Bhojanamhi cāmattaññuṃ, kusītaṃ hīnavīriyaṃ;
|
immoderate in eating, indolent, and dissipated. [1]
|
|
|
Taṃ ve pasahati māro, vāto rukkhaṃva dubbalaṃ.
|
Just as a storm throws down a weak tree, so does Mara overpower
|
|
|

|
|
Asubhānupassiṃ viharantaṃ, indriyesu susaṃvutaṃ;
|
the man who lives meditating on the impurities, who is controlled in his senses,
|
|
|
Bhojanamhi ca mattaññuṃ, saddhaṃ āraddhavīriyaṃ;
|
moderate in eating, and filled with faith and earnest effort. [2]
|
|
|
Taṃ ve nappasahati māro, vāto selaṃva pabbataṃ.
|
Just as a storm cannot prevail against a rocky mountain, so Mara can never overpower
|
|
|

|
|
Anikkasāvo kāsāvaṃ, yo vatthaṃ paridahissati;
|
Whoever being depraved, should don the monk's yellow robe,
|
|
|
Apeto damasaccena, na so kāsāvamarahati.
|
devoid of self-control and truthfulness he surely is not worthy of the robe.
|
|
|

|
|
|
Yo ca vantakasāvassa, sīlesu susamāhito;
|
But whoever is purged of depravity, well-established in virtues
|
|
|
Upeto damasaccena, sa ve kāsāvamarahati.
|
and filled with self-control and truthfulness, he indeed is worthy of the yellow robe.
|
|
|

|
|
Asāre sāramatino, sāre cāsāradassino;
|
Those who mistake the unessential to be essential and the essential to be unessential,
|
Принимающие несущественное за существенное, видящие в существенном не существенное -
|
|
Te sāraṃ nādhigacchanti, micchāsaṅkappagocarā.
|
dwelling in wrong thoughts, never arrive at the essential.
|
они никогда не достигнут существенного, ведь их удел - недолжные намерения.
|

|
|
Sārañca sārato ñatvā, asārañca asārato;
|
Those who know the essential to be essential and the unessential to be unessential,
|
|
|
Te sāraṃ adhigacchanti, sammāsaṅkappagocarā.
|
dwelling in right thoughts, do arrive at the essential.
|
|
|

|
|
Yathā agāraṃ ducchannaṃ, vuṭṭhī samativijjhati;
|
Just as rain breaks through an ill-thatched house,
|
|
|
Evaṃ abhāvitaṃ cittaṃ, rāgo samativijjhati.
|
so passion penetrates an undeveloped mind.
|
|

|
Yathā agāraṃ suchannaṃ, vuṭṭhī na samativijjhati;
|
Just as rain does not break through a well-thatched house,
|
|
|
Evaṃ subhāvitaṃ cittaṃ, rāgo na samativijjhati.
|
so passion never penetrates a well-developed mind.
|
|

|
Idha socati pecca socati, pāpakārī ubhayattha socati;
|
The evil-doer grieves here and hereafter; he grieves in both the worlds.
|
|
|
So socati so vihaññati, disvā kammakiliṭṭhamattano.
|
He laments and is afflicted, recollecting his own impure deeds.
|
|
|

|
|
Idha modati pecca modati, katapuñño ubhayattha modati;
|
The doer of good rejoices here and hereafter; he rejoices in both the worlds.
|
|
|
So modati so pamodati, disvā kammavisuddhimattano.
|
He rejoices and exults, recollecting his own pure deeds.
|
|
|

|
|
Idha tappati pecca tappati, pāpakārī [pāpakāri (?)] ubhayattha tappati;
|
The evil-doer suffers here and hereafter; he suffers in both the worlds.
|
Здесь он мучается и после смерти мучается; в обоих мирах мучается злодей.
|
|
"Pāpaṃ me kata"nti tappati, bhiyyo [bhīyo (sī.)] tappati duggatiṃ gato.
|
The thought, "Evil have I done," torments him, and he suffers even more when gone to realms of woe.
|
Он мучается, думая: "Я совершил зло", ещё больше он мучается, попав в место, полное страданий".
|

|
|
Idha nandati pecca nandati, katapuñño ubhayattha nandati;
|
The doer of good delights here and hereafter; he delights in both the worlds.
|
|
|
"Puññaṃ me kata"nti nandati, bhiyyo nandati suggatiṃ gato.
|
The thought, "Good have I done," delights him, and he delights even more when gone to realms of bliss.
|
|

|
|
Bahumpi ce saṃhita [sahitaṃ (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)] bhāsamāno, na takkaro hoti naro pamatto;
|
Much though he recites the sacred texts, but acts not accordingly, that heedless man
|
|
|
Gopova gāvo gaṇayaṃ paresaṃ, na bhāgavā sāmaññassa hoti.
|
is like a cowherd who only counts the cows of others — he does not partake of the blessings of the holy life.
|
|
|

|
|
Appampi ce saṃhita bhāsamāno, dhammassa hoti [hotī (sī. pī.)] anudhammacārī;
|
Little though he recites the sacred texts, but puts the Teaching into practice,
|
|
|
Rāgañca dosañca pahāya mohaṃ, sammappajāno suvimuttacitto;
|
forsaking lust, hatred, and delusion, with true wisdom and emancipated mind,
|
|
|
Anupādiyāno idha vā huraṃ vā, sa bhāgavā sāmaññassa hoti.
|
clinging to nothing of this or any other world — he indeed partakes of the blessings of a holy life.
|
|
|
Yamakavaggo paṭhamo niṭṭhito.
|
