Karaṇīyamatthakusalena, yantasantaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca;
|
What should be done by one with skill in good The State of Peace to have attained is this.
|

Sakko ujū ca suhujū [sūjū (sī.)] ca, suvaco cassa mudu anatimānī.
|
He would be able, right, upright, And meek and gentle and not proud,
|
|
|

|
|
|
Santussako ca subharo ca, appakicco ca sallahukavutti;
|
Contented, easy to support, Unbusy, frugal,
|
|
|
Santindriyo ca nipako ca, appagabbho kulesvananugiddho.
|
and serene In faculties, prudent, modest, Not fawning upon families.
|
|
|

|
|
|
Na ca khuddamācare kiñci, yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṃ;
|
He would no slight thing do at all That other wise men might deplore.
|
|
|
Sukhinova khemino hontu, sabbasattā [sabbe sattā (sī. syā.)] bhavantu sukhitattā.
|
[Then he would think] ' Joyful and safe' Let every creature's heart rejoice.
|
|
|

|
Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi, tasā vā thāvarā vanavasesā;
|
Whatever breathing beings there are, No matter whether frail or firm With none excepted
|
|
|
Dīghā vā yeva mahantā [mahanta (?)], majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā.
|
, long or big' Or middle-sized or short or small Or thick,
|
|
|

|
|
|
Diṭṭhā vā yeva adiṭṭhā [adiṭṭha (?)], ye va [ye ca (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)] dūre vasanti avidūre;
|
or those seen or unseen,' Or whether dwelling far or near,
|
|
|
Bhūtā va [vā (syā. kaṃ. pī. ka.)] sambhavesī va [vā (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)], sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
|
That are or that yet seek to be, Let every creature's heart rejoice
|
|
|

|
|
|
Na paro paraṃ nikubbetha, nātimaññetha katthaci na kañci [naṃ kañci (sī. pī.), naṃ kiñci (syā.), na kiñci (ka.)] ;
|
Let none another one undo, Or slight him at all anywhere;
|
|
|
Byārosanā paṭighasaññā, nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya.
|
Let them not wish each other ill With provocation or resistive thought.
|
|
|

|
|
Mātā yathā niyaṃ puttamāyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe;
|
Thus, as a mother with her life Might guard her son, her only child,
|
|
|
Evampi sabbabhūtesu, mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ.
|
Would he maintain unboundedly His thought for every living being.
|
|
|
8.

|
|
|
Mettañca sabbalokasmi, mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ;
|
His thought of love for all the world He would maintain unboundedly,
|
|
|
Uddhaṃ adho ca tiriyañca, asambādhaṃ averamasapattaṃ.
|
Above, below, and all around, Unchecked, no malice with or foe.
|
|
|

|
|
|
Tiṭṭhaṃ caraṃ nisinno va [vā (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)], sayāno yāvatāssa vitamiddho [vigatamiddho (bahūsu)] ;
|
Standing or walking, seated too, Or lying down the while undrowsing,
|
|
|
Etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya, brahmametaṃ vihāramidhamāhu.
|
He would pursue this mindfulness: This is Divine Abiding here, they say.
|
|

10.
|
|
|
|
Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma, sīlavā dassanena sampanno;
|
But he that traffics not with views Is virtuous with perfected seeing
|
|
|
Kāmesu vinaya [vineyya (sī.)] gedhaṃ, na hi jātuggabbhaseyya puna retīti.
|
Till, purged of greed for sense-desires, He will surely come no more to any womb.
|
|
|
Mettasuttaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ.
|
|
|
|
Khuddakapāṭhapāḷi niṭṭhitā.
