8. Evaṃ "ito dinnena yāpenti, petā kālagatā tahi"nti vatvā idāni upamāhi tamatthaṃ pakāsento "unname udakaṃ vuṭṭha"nti idaṃ gāthādvayamāha.

33.So [the Blessed One] said' For there is never ploughing there,' Nor any cattle-herding found,' Nor merchandizing just the same, Nor bartering for coin of gold:]' The ghosts of the departed kin Live there on giving given here And when he had said this, he now uttered the pair of stanzas, namely, As water showered on the hill', explaining that meaning with a simile.

Благословенный произнес: "Ведь нет там земледелия и скотоводства там тоже не найти и точно так же нет там торговли, нет продажи и покупки в обмен на золото. Там скончавшиеся в форме голодных духов живут тем, что здесь даётся." после чего добавил следующее: "Как вода, проливающаяся на возвышенности стекает в низины так и то, что дано здесь, приносит благо голодным духам.", приводя эту метафору в качестве объяснения значения.

Tassattho – yathā unnate thale ussāde bhūmibhāge meghehi abhivuṭṭhaṃ udakaṃ ninnaṃ pavattati, yo yo bhūmibhāgo ninno oṇato, taṃ taṃ pavattati gacchati pāpuṇāti, evameva ito dinnaṃ dānaṃ petānaṃ upakappati nibbattati, pātubhavatīti attho.

34.Here is their meaning. Just as (yatha), when on the hill (unname), on dry land, on a high piece of ground, rain is showered down (abhi-vattham) by clouds, the water (udakam) flows down (pavattati) to reach the hollow vale (ninnam), flows, goes to, reaches, any hollow, low-lying piece of ground; so (evam eva)[213] the giving of a gift given (dinnam) from here (ito) can serve (upakappati)—the meaning is,becomes generated, manifested, for—the ghosts of the departed kin (petanam);

Ninnamiva hi udakappavattiyā ṭhānaṃ petaloko dānupakappanāya.

since the ghost world is like the hollow place for the water to flow down to, and the service of the almsgiving is like the water's flowing down,

Yathāha – "idaṃ kho, brāhmaṇa, ṭhānaṃ, yattha ṭhitassa taṃ dānaṃ upakappatī"ti (a. ni. 10.177).
|
according as it is said ' That is the place, and an almsgiving serves him while he remains there' (§ 30).

Yathā ca kandarapadarasākhāpasākhakusobbhamahāsobbhasannipātehi vārivahā mahānajjo pūrā hutvā sāgaraṃ paripūrenti, evampi ito dinnadānaṃ pubbe vuttanayeneva petānaṃ upakappatīti.
|
And just as(yatha), with the confluence of cascades and springs, rills and rivulets, pools and meres, the great rivers, the river-beds (varivaha) when they are full (püra), can bear the water down to fill the sea (sagaramparipürenti), so giving given here can serve the ghosts of the departed kin in the way already stated.
