52.Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati - pe - "upādāniyesu, bhikkhave, dhammesu assādānupassino viharato taṇhā pavaḍḍhati. At Sāvatthī. “There are things that are prone to being grasped. When you concentrate on the gratification provided by these things, your craving grows. Dwelling at Savatthi. There the Blessed One said to the monks: "In one who keeps focusing on the allure of clingable phenomena (or: phenomena that offer sustenance = the five aggregates), craving develops.
Taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṃ; upādānapaccayā bhavo; bhavapaccayā jāti; jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṃ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti. Craving is a condition for grasping. Grasping is a condition for continued existence. Continued existence is a condition for rebirth. Rebirth is a condition for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be. From craving as a requisite condition comes clinging/sustenance. From clinging/sustenance as a requisite condition comes becoming. From becoming as a requisite condition comes birth. From birth as a requisite condition, then aging & death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair come into play.
Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti". That is how this entire mass of suffering originates. Such is the origin of this entire mass of suffering & stress.
"Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, dasannaṃ vā kaṭṭhavāhānaṃ vīsāya vā kaṭṭhavāhānaṃ tiṃsāya vā kaṭṭhavāhānaṃ cattārīsāya vā kaṭṭhavāhānaṃ mahāaggikkhandho jaleyya. Suppose a bonfire was burning with ten, twenty, thirty, or forty loads of wood. "Just as if a great mass of fire of ten... twenty... thirty or forty cartloads of timber were burning,
Tatra puriso kālena kālaṃ sukkhāni ceva tiṇāni pakkhipeyya, sukkhāni ca gomayāni pakkhipeyya, sukkhāni ca kaṭṭhāni pakkhipeyya. And from time to time someone would toss in dry grass, cow dung, or wood. and into it a man would time & again throw dried grass, dried cow dung, & dried timber,
Evañhi so, bhikkhave, mahāaggikkhandho tadāhāro tadupādāno ciraṃ dīghamaddhānaṃ jaleyya. Fueled and sustained by that, the bonfire would burn for a long time. so that the great mass of fire — thus nourished, thus sustained — would burn for a long, long time.
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, upādāniyesu dhammesu assādānupassino viharato taṇhā pavaḍḍhati. In the same way, there are things that are prone to being grasped. When you concentrate on the gratification provided by these things, your craving grows. In the same way, in one who keeps focusing on the allure of clingable phenomena, craving develops.

Taṇhānirodhā upādānanirodho; upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho; bhavanirodhā jātinirodho; jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇaṃ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti. When craving ceases, grasping ceases. When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases. When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease. From the cessation of craving comes the cessation of clinging/sustenance. From the cessation of clinging/sustenance comes the cessation of becoming. From the cessation of becoming comes the cessation of birth. From the cessation of birth, then aging, illness & death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair all cease.
Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases. Such is the cessation of this entire mass of suffering & stress.

Evañhi so, bhikkhave, mahāaggikkhandho purimassa ca upādānassa pariyādānā aññassa ca anupahārā [anupāhārā (pī.)] anāhāro nibbāyeyya. As the original fuel is used up and no more is added, the bonfire would be extinguished due to lack of fuel. so that the great mass of fire — its original sustenance being consumed, and no other being offered — would, without nutriment, go out.
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, upādāniyesu dhammesu ādīnavānupassino viharato taṇhā nirujjhati, taṇhānirodhā upādānanirodho - pe - evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotī"ti. In the same way, there are things that are prone to being grasped. When you concentrate on the drawbacks of these things, your craving ceases.
