10.Sāvatthinidānaṃ.
[Near Sāvatthī…]
Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi –
Standing to one side, a devatā addressed the Blessed One with a verse:
"Araññe viharantānaṃ, santānaṃ brahmacārinaṃ;
“Living in the wilderness, staying peaceful, remaining chaste,
Ekabhattaṃ bhuñjamānānaṃ, kena vaṇṇo pasīdatī"ti.
eating just one meal a day: why are their faces so bright & serene?”
"Atītaṃ nānusocanti, nappajappanti nāgataṃ;
The Buddha: “They don’t sorrow over the past, don’t long for the future.
Paccuppannena yāpenti, tena vaṇṇo pasīdati".
They survive on the present. That’s why their faces are bright & serene.
"Anāgatappajappāya, atītassānusocanā;
From longing for the future, from sorrowing over the past,
Etena bālā sussanti, naḷova harito luto"ti.
fools wither away like a green reed cut down.”
Naḷavaggo paṭhamo.
Tassuddānaṃ –
Oghaṃ nimokkhaṃ upaneyyaṃ, accenti katichindi ca;
Jāgaraṃ appaṭividitā, susammuṭṭhā mānakāminā;
Araññe dasamo vutto, vaggo tena pavuccati.
