Atha bhagavā "yasmā thaddho paṭithaddhabhāvena vinetuṃ na sakkā, so hi paṭithaddhabhāve kariyamāne seyyathāpi caṇḍassa kukkurassa nāsāya pittaṃ bhindeyya, so bhiyyoso mattāya caṇḍataro assa, evaṃ thaddhataro hoti, mudunā pana so sakkā vinetu"nti ñatvā "sādhāvuso"ti piyavacanena tassa vacanaṃ sampaṭicchitvā nikkhami.

3.5. Then, after having understood thus: “Since it is not possible to discipline (vinetuṃ) an obdurate one (thaddho) by means of retaliatory obduracy (paṭithaddhabhāva)---- indeed when the retaliatory obduracy is being done---- just as for example (seyyathāpi), if one were to break (bhindeyya) the pitta (bile, gall) at the nose (nāsa) of a quick-tempered (caṇḍa) dog, it would become all the more fierce (caṇḍatara) to a greater extent (bhiyyosomatta) ---- in the same manner, he (the ogre) is going to be more obdurate (thaddhatara); with mildness (mudunā) however, it is possible to discipline him,” the Blessed One came out after having accepted (sampaṭicchitvā) his word by saying sweetly (piyavacanena) thus: “very well (sādhu), O friend!”

Therefore, it has been told thus: “Sādhāvuso ti bhagavā nikkhami (saying: “O friend! Well and good.’ the Blessed One went out).
