346.Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi – "bhūtapubbaṃ, bhikkhave, araññāyatane mahāsarasī.
|
Then the Lord addressed the monks, saying: “Formerly, monks, there was a great pond in a stretch of forest;
|
Тогда Благословенный обратился к монахам, сказав: "Раньше, монахи, здесь в лесу был большой пруд,
|
|
|
Taṃ nāgā upanissāya vihariṃsu.
|
bull elephants lived near it
|
возле него обитали огромные слоны
|
|
|
Te taṃ sarasiṃ ogāhetvā, soṇḍāya bhisamuḷālaṃ abbuhitvā, suvikkhālitaṃ vikkhāletvā, akaddamaṃ saṅkhāditvā, ajjhoharanti.
|
and these, having plunged into that pond, having tugged out the lotus fibres and stalks with their trunks, having washed them well, and having chewed them free of mud, swallowed them.
|
и погружаясь в воду они, выдергивая корни и клубни лотоса с помощью хобота, хорошо отмыв и пережевав, в чистом от грязи виде съедали их.
|

Tesaṃ taṃ vaṇṇāya ceva hoti, balāya ca.
|
Thus there came to be for them both beauty and strength,
|
Это давало им красоту, и силу
|
|
|
Na ca tatonidānaṃ maraṇaṃ vā nigacchanti, maraṇamattaṃ vā dukkhaṃ.
|
and not for this reason did they incur death or suffering like unto death.
|
и из-за этого они не умирали и не испытывали мук как при смерти.
|
|
|
Tesaṃyeva kho pana, bhikkhave, mahānāgānaṃ anusikkhamānā taruṇā bhiṅkacchāpā.
|
But, monks, among these great bull elephants were young elephant calves
|
Но, монахи, среди этих огромных слонов были молодые слонята
|
|
|
Te taṃ sarasiṃ ogāhetvā, soṇḍāya bhisamuḷālaṃ abbuhitvā, na suvikkhālitaṃ vikkhāletvā, sakaddamaṃ saṅkhāditvā, ajjhoharanti.

and these, imitating them, having plunged into that pond, having tugged out the lotus fibres and stalks with their trunks, but not having washed them well, having chewed them with the mud, swallowed them.
|
и эти слонята, подражая им, погружались в пруд и выдергивали хоботами корни и клубни лотоса. Но не вымыв их как следует, жуя их в грязном виде, они съедали их.

Tesaṃ taṃ neva vaṇṇāya hoti, na balāya.
|
Thus there came to be for them neither beauty nor strength,
|
Оттого не было у них ни красоты, ни силы
|
|
|
Tatonidānañca maraṇaṃ vā nigacchanti, maraṇamattaṃ vā dukkhaṃ.
|
and for this reason they incurred death or suffering like unto death.
|
и из-за этого они умирали и испытывали муки как при смерти.
|
|
|
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, devadatto mamānukrubbaṃ [mamānukubbaṃ (sī. syā.)] kapaṇo marissatīti.
|
Likewise, monks, Devadatta will die, a wretched creature, copying me.
|
Точно так, монахи, подражая мне умрёт несчастный Дэвадатта.
|
