"Yathā, mahārāja, kocideva puriso aññatarassa purisassa ambaṃ avahareyya, tamenaṃ ambasāmiko gahetvā rañño dasseyya 'iminā deva purisena mayhaṃ ambā avahaṭā'ti, so evaṃ vadeyya 'nāhaṃ, deva, imassa ambe avaharāmi, aññe te ambā, ye iminā ropitā, aññe te ambā, ye mayā avahaṭā, nāhaṃ daṇḍappatto'ti.

“Suppose, sire, some man were to steal another man’s mangoes and the owner of the mangoes were to seize him and bring him before the king, saying, ‘Your majesty, my mangoes were stolen by this man,’ and he were to say, ‘Your majesty, I did not steal his mangoes; the mangoes he planted were different from these that I stole; I do not deserve punishment.’

‘Suppose, O king, some man were to steal a mango from another man, and the owner of the mango were to seize him and bring him before the king, and charge him with the crime. And the thief were to say: “Your Majesty! I have not taken away this man’s mangoes. Those that he put in the ground are different from the ones I took. I do not deserve to be punished.”

– Например, государь, один человек стащил у другого манго. Владелец манго схватил его и привел к князю: «Сиятельный! Этот человек стащил у меня манго! » А тот так скажет: «Не брал я, сиятельный, его манго. Те манго, что он посадил,– это одно, а те манго, что я взял,– это другое. Меня не за что наказывать».

Kiṃ nu kho so, mahārāja, puriso daṇḍappatto bhaveyyā"ti?
|
Would he, sire, not deserve punishment?"
|
How then? would he be guilty?’
|
Так как, государь, заслуживает этот человек наказания?
|
|
|
"Āma, bhante, daṇḍappatto bhaveyyā"ti.
|
“Yes, revered sir, he would deserve punishment.”
|
‘Certainly, Sir. He would deserve to be punished.’
|
– Да, почтенный, заслуживает.
|
|
|
"Kena kāraṇenā"ti?
|
“For what reason?"
|
‘But on what ground?’
|
– Почему же?
|
|
|
"Kiñcāpi so evaṃ vadeyya, purimaṃ, bhante, ambaṃ appaccakkhāya pacchimena ambena so puriso daṇḍappatto bhaveyyā"ti.
|
” “Whatever he may say, the mangoes he stole resulted from the mangoes which, he admits, the other man planted.”
|
‘Because, in spite of whatever he may say, he would be guilty in respect of the last mango which resulted from the first one (the owner set in the ground).’
|
– Что бы он ни говорил, но то первое манго ненаблюдаемо, а за позднейшее манго этот человек заслуживает наказания.

"Evameva kho, mahārāja, iminā nāmarūpena kammaṃ karoti sobhanaṃ vā pāpakaṃ vā, tena kammena aññaṃ nāmarūpaṃ paṭisandahati, tasmā na mutto pāpakehi kammehī"ti.
|
“Even so, sire, by means of this mind-and-matter one does a good or bad deed and, because of this deed, another mindand- matter takes rebirth; therefore, one is not freed from evil deeds.”
|
‘Just so, great king, deeds good or evil are done by this name-and-form and another is reborn. But that other is not thereby released from its deeds (its Karma).’
|
– Вот так же, государь, этим образно-знаковым существо совершает деяние, праведное или греховное, а через это деяние воплощается иное образно-знаковое. Поэтому оно не освобождается от греховных деяний.
