Imissā paṭhamamahāsaṅgītiyā vattamānāya vinayasaṅgahāvasāne suttantapiṭake ādinikāyassa ādisuttaṃ brahmajālaṃ pucchantena āyasmatā mahākassapena – "brahmajālaṃ, āvuso ānanda, kattha bhāsita"nti, evamādivuttavacanapariyosāne yattha ca bhāsitaṃ, yañcārabbha bhāsitaṃ, taṃ sabbaṃ pakāsento āyasmā ānando evaṃ me sutantiādimāha.

1. Thus have I heard. This is the introduction or beginning to the Brahmajāla Sutta, spoken by the Venerable Ānanda on the occasion of the First Great Council. For at the First Council, after the compilation of the Vinaya Piṭaka was completed, the Venerable Mahākassapa questioned the Venerable Ānanda about the Brahmajāla, the first sutta in the first collection (nikāya) of the Sutta Piṭaka, asking: “Friend Ānanda, where was the Brahmajāla Sutta spoken? " and so on. When the questionnaire was finished, the Venerable Ānanda explained everything, where it was spoken, the reason, etc., beginning with the words: “Thus have I heard. ”
