Tattha kiñcāpi imassa pañhassa ito aññatra veyyākaraṇesu dasa akusalakammapathā vuttā. | 48. In the Answers to Questions other than this the Ten Unprofitable Courses of Action 32 are given, | |
Yathāha – | according as it is said | |
"Dasasu, bhikkhave, dhammesu bhikkhu sammā nibbindamāno - pe - dukkhassantakaro hoti. | ‘ Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu becomes completely dispassionate towards ten ideas,...he is one who makes an end of suffering here and now. | |

Dasasu akusalakammapathesu. | The ten unprofitable courses of action: | |
Imesu kho, bhikkhave, dasasu dhammesu bhikkhu sammā nibbindamāno…pe. … dukkhassantakaro hoti. | when a bhikkhu becomes completely dispassionate towards these ten ideas,... he makes an end of suffering here and now. | |
'Dasa pañhā dasa uddesā dasa veyyākaraṇānī'ti iti yaṃ taṃ vuttaṃ, idametaṃ paṭicca vutta"nti (a. ni. 10.27). | So it was with reference to this that it was said [earlier:] ten questions, ten indications, ten answers ’ (A. v. 54). | |
Idha pana yasmā ayamāyasmā attānaṃ anupanetvā aññaṃ byākātukāmo, yasmā vā iminā pariyāyena byākataṃ subyākatameva hoti, tasmā yehi dasahi aṅgehi samannāgato arahāti pavuccati, tesaṃ adhigamaṃ dīpento dasahaṅgehi samannāgato arahāti pavuccatīti puggalādhiṭṭhānāya desanāya vissajjeti. | But although that is so, nevertheless here the venerable one, using the teaching in terms of a person, replied 'He who is endowed with ten factors is declared an Arahant', showing the attainment of those ten factors, in virtue of possessing which an Arahant (Accomplished One) is so called. He did so either because he wanted to declare final knowledge without citing himself, or else because [the question] is well answered when answered in this way, too.33 | |

"Asekho asekhoti, bhante, vuccati, kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu asekho hotīti? | “ Adept, adept ” is said, venerable sir. How does a bhikkhu come to be called an adept? | |
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhāya sammādiṭṭhiyā samannāgato hoti, asekhena sammāsaṅkappena samannāgato hoti, asekhāya sammāvācāya samannāgato hoti, asekhena sammākammantena samannāgato hoti, asekhena sammāājīvena samannāgato hoti, asekhena sammāvāyāmena samannāgato hoti, asekhāya sammāsatiyā samannāgato hoti, asekhena sammāsamādhinā samannāgato hoti, asekhena sammāñāṇena samannāgato hoti, asekhāya sammāvimuttiyā samannāgato hoti. | — Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with the adept’s right view, the adept’s right intention, the adept’s right speech, the adept’s right action, the adept’s right livelihood, the adept’s right effort, the adept’s right mindfulness, the adept’s right concentration, the adept’s right knowledge, and the adept’s right deliverance: | |
Evaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekho hotī"ti (a. ni. 10.111). – | that is how a bhikkhu comes to be called an adept ’ (A.v.221). | |
Evamādīsu suttesu vuttanayeneva veditabbānīti. | should be understood according as they are stated in such discourses as that which follows (above). | |
