89.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
§89. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tīhi, bhikkhave, asaddhammehi abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho.
“Monks, conquered by three forms of false Dhamma–his mind overwhelmed–Devadatta1 is incurably doomed to deprivation, to hell, for an eon.
Katamehi tīhi?
Which three?
Pāpicchatāya, bhikkhave, abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho.
Conquered by evil desires–his mind overwhelmed–Devadatta is incurably doomed to deprivation, to hell, for the duration of an eon.
Pāpamittatāya, bhikkhave, abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho.
Conquered by friendship with evil people–his mind overwhelmed–Devadatta is incurably doomed to deprivation, to hell, for the duration of an eon.
Sati kho pana uttarikaraṇīye [uttariṃ karaṇīye (syā.)] oramattakena visesādhigamena [visesādhigamena ca (syā. pī.)] antarā vosānaṃ āpādi.
And, there being something further to be done, he nevertheless stopped halfway with a lower modicum of distinctive attainment.
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, tīhi asaddhammehi abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho"ti.
Conquered by these three forms of false Dhamma–his mind overwhelmed–Devadatta is incurably doomed to deprivation, to hell, for an eon.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
[So with regard to this it was said:]
"Mā jātu koci lokasmiṃ, pāpiccho udapajjatha;
May no one in the world ever be reborn with evil desire.
Tadamināpi jānātha, pāpicchānaṃ yathā gati.
Know that through that evil desire, his destination’s that of all who have evil desires.
"Paṇḍitoti samaññāto, bhāvitattoti sammato;
I’ve heard how Devadatta, –regarded as wise,
Jalaṃva yasasā aṭṭhā, devadattoti vissuto [me sutaṃ (pāḷiyaṃ)].
composed, incandescent with honor–
"So pamāṇamanuciṇṇo [pamādamanuciṇṇo (ka. sī. syā. pī.), samānamanuciṇṇo (aṭṭha.)], āsajja naṃ tathāgataṃ;
in the thrall of heedlessness assaulted the Tathāgata
Avīcinirayaṃ patto, catudvāraṃ bhayānakaṃ.
and fell to the four-gated, fearful place: Avīci, unmitigated hell.
"Aduṭṭhassa hi yo dubbhe, pāpakammaṃ akubbato;
Whoever plots against one free of corruption who’s done no evil deed:
Tameva pāpaṃ phusati [phusseti (syā.)], duṭṭhacittaṃ anādaraṃ.
that evil touches him himself, corrupted in mind, disrespectful.
"Samuddaṃ visakumbhena, yo maññeyya padūsituṃ;
Whoever might think of polluting the ocean with a pot of poison,
Na so tena padūseyya, bhesmā hi udadhi mahā.
couldn’t succeed, for the mass of water is great.
"Evameva [evametaṃ (syā.)] tathāgataṃ, yo vādena vihiṃsati;
So it is when anyone attacks with abuse the Tathāgata
Sammaggataṃ [samaggataṃ (sī. ka.)] santacittaṃ, vādo tamhi na rūhati.
–rightly-gone, of peaceful mind– for abuse doesn’t grow on him.
"Tādisaṃ mittaṃ kubbetha, tañca seveyya paṇḍito;
A wise person should make friends, should associate, with a person like him–
Yassa maggānugo bhikkhu, khayaṃ dukkhassa pāpuṇe"ti.
whose path a monk can pursue and reach the ending of suffering & stress.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Dasamaṃ.
Catuttho vaggo niṭṭhito.
Tassuddānaṃ –
Vitakkāsakkārasadda, cavanaloke asubhaṃ;
Dhammaandhakāramalaṃ, devadattena te dasāti.
