88.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
§88. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tayome, bhikkhave, antarāmalā antarāamittā antarāsapattā antarāvadhakā antarāpaccatthikā.
“Monks, there are these three inside stains, inside enemies, inside foes, inside murderers, inside adversaries.
Katame tayo?
Which three?
Lobho, bhikkhave, antarāmalo antarāamitto antarāsapatto antarāvadhako antarāpaccatthiko.
Greed is an inside stain, inside enemy, inside foe, inside murderer, inside adversary.
Doso, bhikkhave, antarāmalo antarāamitto antarāsapatto antarāvadhako antarāpaccatthiko.
Aversion is an inside stain [, inside enemy, inside foe, inside murderer, inside adversary.]
Moho, bhikkhave, antarāmalo antarāamitto antarāsapatto antarāvadhako antarāpaccatthiko.
Delusion is an inside stain, inside enemy, inside foe, inside murderer, inside adversary.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo antarāmalā antarāamittā antarāsapattā antarāvadhakā antarāpaccatthikā"ti.
These are the three inside stains, inside enemies, inside foes, inside murderers, inside adversaries.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
[So with regard to this it was said:]
"Anatthajanano lobho, lobho cittappakopano;
Greed causes harm. Greed provokes the mind.
Bhayamantarato jātaṃ, taṃ jano nāvabujjhati.
People don’t realize it as a danger born from within.
"Luddho atthaṃ na jānāti, luddho dhammaṃ na passati;
A person, when greedy, doesn’t know his own welfare; when greedy, doesn’t see Dhamma.
Andhatamaṃ [andhaṃ tamaṃ (sī.)] tadā hoti, yaṃ lobho sahate naraṃ.
Overcome with greed, he’s in the dark, blind.
"Yo ca lobhaṃ pahantvāna, lobhaneyye na lubbhati;
But when one, abandoning greed, feels no greed for what would merit greed,
Lobho pahīyate tamhā, udabindūva pokkharā.
greed gets shed from him– like a drop of water off a lotus leaf.
"Anatthajanano doso, doso cittappakopano;
Aversion causes harm. Aversion provokes the mind.
Bhayamantarato jātaṃ, taṃ jano nāvabujjhati.
People don’t realize it as a danger born from within.
"Duṭṭho atthaṃ na jānāti, duṭṭho dhammaṃ na passati;
A person, when aversive, doesn’t know his own welfare; when aversive, doesn’t see Dhamma.
Andhatamaṃ tadā hoti, yaṃ doso sahate naraṃ.
Overcome with aversion he’s in the dark, blind.
"Yo ca dosaṃ pahantvāna, dosaneyye na dussati;
But when one, abandoning aversion, feels no aversion for what would merit aversion,
Doso pahīyate tamhā, tālapakkaṃva bandhanā.
aversion drops away from him– like a palm leaf from its stem.
"Anatthajanano moho, moho cittappakopano;
Delusion causes harm. Delusion provokes the mind.
Bhayamantarato jātaṃ, taṃ jano nāvabujjhati.
People don’t realize it as a danger born from within.
"Mūḷho atthaṃ na jānāti, mūḷho dhammaṃ na passati;
A person, when deluded, doesn’t know his own welfare; when deluded, doesn’t see Dhamma.
Andhatamaṃ tadā hoti, yaṃ moho sahate naraṃ.
Overcome with delusion he’s in the dark, blind.
"Yo ca mohaṃ pahantvāna, mohaneyye na muyhati;
But when one, abandoning delusion, feels no delusion for what would merit delusion,
Mohaṃ vihanti so sabbaṃ, ādiccovudayaṃ tama"nti.
he disperses all delusion– as the rising of the sun, the dark.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Navamaṃ.
