75.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
§75. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmiṃ.
“Monks, these three types of persons can be found existing in the world.
Katame tayo?
Which three?
Avuṭṭhikasamo, padesavassī, sabbatthābhivassī.
One like a cloud without rain, one who rains locally, and one who rains everywhere.
"Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo avuṭṭhikasamo hoti?
“And how is a person like a cloud without rain?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sabbesaññeva na dātā hoti, samaṇabrāhmaṇakapaṇaddhikavanibbakayācakānaṃ [… vaṇibbakayācakānaṃ (sī.)] annaṃ pānaṃ vatthaṃ yānaṃ mālāgandhavilepanaṃ seyyāvasathapadīpeyyaṃ.
There is the case where a person is not a giver of food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, dwellings, or lights to anyone at all: to contemplatives or brahmans, to any of the miserable, the homeless, or beggars.
Evaṃ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo avuṭṭhikasamo hoti.
This is how a person is like a cloud without rain.
"Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo padesavassī hoti?
“And how is a person one who rains locally?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ekaccānaṃ dātā (hoti) [( ) natthi syāmapotthake], ekaccānaṃ na dātā hoti samaṇabrāhmaṇakapaṇaddhikavanibbakayācakānaṃ annaṃ pānaṃ vatthaṃ yānaṃ mālāgandhavilepanaṃ seyyāvasathapadīpeyyaṃ.
There is the case where a person is a giver of food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, dwellings, & lights to some contemplatives & brahmans, to some of the miserable, the homeless, & beggars, but not to others.
Evaṃ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo padesavassī hoti.
This is how a person is one who rains locally.
"Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo sabbatthābhivassī hoti?
“And how is a person one who rains everywhere?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sabbesaṃva deti, samaṇabrāhmaṇakapaṇaddhikavanibbakayācakānaṃ annaṃ pānaṃ vatthaṃ yānaṃ mālāgandhavilepanaṃ seyyāvasathapadīpeyyaṃ.
There is the case where a person gives food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, dwellings, & lights to all contemplatives & brahmans, to all of the miserable, the homeless, & beggars.
Evaṃ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo sabbatthābhivassī hoti.
This is how a person is one who rains everywhere.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmi"nti.
“These are the three types of persons who can be found existing in the world.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
[So with regard to this it was said:]
"Na samaṇe na brāhmaṇe, na kapaṇaddhikavanibbake;
Not to contemplatives, to brahmans, to the miserable, nor to the homeless
Laddhāna saṃvibhājeti, annaṃ pānañca bhojanaṃ;
does he share what he’s gained: food, drinks, nourishment.
Taṃ ve avuṭṭhikasamoti, āhu naṃ purisādhamaṃ.
He, that lowest of people, is called a cloud with no rain.
"Ekaccānaṃ na dadāti, ekaccānaṃ pavecchati;
To some he doesn’t give, to others he does:
Taṃ ve padesavassīti, āhu medhāvino janā.
the intelligent call him one who rains locally.
"Subhikkhavāco puriso, sabbabhūtānukampako;
A person responsive to requests, sympathetic to all beings,
Āmodamāno pakireti, detha dethāti bhāsati.
delighting in distributing alms: “Give to them! Give!” he says.
"Yathāpi megho thanayitvā, gajjayitvā pavassati;
As a cloud–resounding, thundering–rains,
Thalaṃ ninnañca pūreti, abhisandantova [abhisandentova (?)] vārinā.
filling with water, drenching the plateaus & gullies:
"Evameva idhekacco, puggalo hoti tādiso;
a person like this is like that.
Dhammena saṃharitvāna, uṭṭhānādhigataṃ dhanaṃ;
Having rightly amassed wealth attained through initiative,
Tappeti annapānena, sammā patte vanibbake"ti.
he satisfies rightly with food & drink those fallen into the homeless state.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
Chaṭṭhaṃ.
