78.Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde. I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī at the Eastern Monastery, the palace of Migāra’s mother.
Tena kho pana samayena visākhāya migāramātuyā nattā kālaṅkatā hoti piyā manāpā. And on that occasion a dear and beloved grandson of Visākhā, Migāra’s mother, had died.
Atha kho visākhā migāramātā allavatthā allakesā divā divassa yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. So Visākhā, Migāra’s mother–her clothes wet, her hair wet–went to the Blessed One in the middle of the day and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side.
Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho visākhaṃ migāramātaraṃ bhagavā etadavoca – As she was sitting there the Blessed One said to her:
"Handa kuto nu tvaṃ, visākhe, āgacchasi allavatthā allakesā idhūpasaṅkantā divā divassā"ti? “Why have you come here, Visākhā–your clothes wet, your hair wet–in the middle of the day?”
"Nattā me, bhante, piyā manāpā kālaṅkatā. When this was said, she said to the Blessed One, “My dear and beloved grandson has died.
Tenāhaṃ allavatthā allakesā idhūpasaṅkantā divā divassā"ti. This is why I have come here–my clothes wet, my hair wet–in the middle of the day.”
"Iccheyyāsi tvaṃ, visākhe, yāvatikā [yāvatakā (?)] sāvatthiyā manussā tāvatike [tāvatake (?)] putte ca nattāro cā"ti? “Visākhā, would you like to have as many children & grandchildren as there are people in Sāvatthī?”
"Iccheyyāhaṃ, bhagavā [iccheyyāhaṃ bhante bhagavā (syā.)] yāvatikā sāvatthiyā manussā tāvatike putte ca nattāro cā"ti. “Yes, lord, I would like to have as many children & grandchildren as there are people in Sāvatthī.”
"Kīvabahukā pana, visākhe, sāvatthiyā manussā devasikaṃ kālaṃ karontī"ti? “But how many people in Sāvatthī die in the course of a day?”
"Dasapi, bhante, sāvatthiyā manussā devasikaṃ kālaṃ karonti; navapi, bhante… aṭṭhapi, bhante… sattapi, bhante… chapi, bhante… pañcapi, bhante… cattāropi, bhante… tīṇipi, bhante… dvepi, bhante, sāvatthiyā manussā devasikaṃ kālaṃ karonti. “Sometimes ten people die in Sāvatthī in the course of a day, sometimes nine… eight… seven… six… five… four… three… two… Sometimes one person dies in Sāvatthī in the course of a day.
Ekopi, bhante, sāvatthiyā manusso devasikaṃ kālaṃ karoti. Sāvatthī is never free from people dying.”
Avivittā, bhante, sāvatthi manussehi kālaṃ karontehī"ti. “So what do you think, Visākhā?
"Taṃ kiṃ maññasi, visākhe, api nu tvaṃ kadāci karahaci anallavatthā vā bhaveyyāsi anallakesā vā"ti? Would you ever be free of wet clothes & wet hair?”
"No hetaṃ, bhante. “No, lord.
Alaṃ me, bhante, tāva bahukehi puttehi ca nattārehi cā"ti. Enough of my having so many children & grandchildren.”
"Yesaṃ kho, visākhe, sataṃ piyāni, sataṃ tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ navuti piyāni, navuti tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ asīti piyāni, asīti tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ sattati piyāni, sattati tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ saṭṭhi piyāni, saṭṭhi tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ paññāsaṃ piyāni, paññāsaṃ tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ cattārīsaṃ piyāni, cattārīsaṃ tesaṃ dukkhāni, yesaṃ tiṃsaṃ piyāni, tiṃsaṃ tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ vīsati piyāni, vīsati tesaṃ dukkhāni, yesaṃ dasa piyāni, dasa tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ nava piyāni, nava tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ aṭṭha piyāni, aṭṭha tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ satta piyāni, satta tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ cha piyāni, cha tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ pañca piyāni, pañca tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ cattāri piyāni, cattāri tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ tīṇi piyāni, tīṇi tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ dve piyāni, dve tesaṃ dukkhāni; yesaṃ ekaṃ piyaṃ, ekaṃ tesaṃ dukkhaṃ; yesaṃ natthi piyaṃ, natthi tesaṃ dukkhaṃ, asokā te virajā anupāyāsāti vadāmī"ti. • “Visākhā, those who have a hundred dear ones have a hundred sufferings. Those who have ninety dear ones have ninety sufferings. Those who have eighty… seventy… sixty… fifty… forty… thirty… twenty… ten… nine… eight… seven… six… five… four… three… two… Those who have one dear one have one suffering. • Those who have no dear ones have no sufferings. • They are free from sorrow, free from stain, free from lamentation, I tell you.”
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
"Ye keci sokā paridevitā vā, The sorrows, lamentations,
Dukkhā ca [dukkhā va (aṭṭha.)] lokasmimanekarūpā; the many kinds of suffering in the world,
Piyaṃ paṭiccappabhavanti ete, exist dependent on something dear.
Piye asante na bhavanti ete. They don’t exist when there’s nothing dear.
"Tasmā hi te sukhino vītasokā, And thus blissful & sorrowless
Yesaṃ piyaṃ natthi kuhiñci loke; are those for whom nothing in the world is anywhere dear.
Tasmā asokaṃ virajaṃ patthayāno, So one who aspires to the stainless & sorrowless
Piyaṃ na kayirātha kuhiñci loke"ti. aṭṭhamaṃ; shouldn’t make anything dear in the world anywhere.
