56.Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī at Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā nānātitthiyasamaṇabrāhmaṇaparibbājakā sāvatthiyaṃ paṭivasanti nānādiṭṭhikā nānākhantikā nānārucikā nānādiṭṭhinissayanissitā. And on that occasion there were many contemplatives, brahmans, & wanderers of various sects living around Sāvatthī with differing views, differing opinions, differing beliefs, dependent for support on their differing views.
Santeke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃvādino evaṃdiṭṭhino – "sassato attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṃ moghamañña"nti. Some of the contemplatives & brahmans held this doctrine, this view: “The self & the cosmos are eternal. Only this is true; anything otherwise is worthless.”
Santi paneke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃvādino evaṃdiṭṭhino – "asassato attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṃ moghamañña"nti. Some of the contemplatives & brahmans held this doctrine, this view: “The self & the cosmos are not eternal” …

Santi paneke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃvādino evaṃdiṭṭhino – "asayaṃkāraṃ aparaṃkāraṃ adhiccasamuppannaṃ sukhadukkhaṃ attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṃ moghamañña"nti. “Pleasure & pain, the self & the cosmos–without self-making, without other-making–are spontaneously arisen. Only this is true; anything otherwise is worthless.”
Te bhaṇḍanajātā kalahajātā vivādāpannā aññamaññaṃ mukhasattīhi vitudantā viharanti – "ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo; nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo"ti. And they kept on arguing, quarreling, & disputing, wounding one another with weapons of the mouth, saying, “The Dhamma is like this, it’s not like that. The Dhamma’s not like that, it’s like this.”
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṃ piṇḍāya pāvisiṃsu. Then in the early morning, a large number of monks adjusted their under robes and–carrying their bowls & robes–went into Sāvatthī for alms.
Sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Having gone for alms in Sāvatthī, after the meal, returning from their alms round, they went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side.
Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – As they were sitting there, they said to the Blessed One,
"Idha, bhante, sambahulā nānātitthiyasamaṇabrāhmaṇaparibbājakā sāvatthiyaṃ paṭivasanti nānādiṭṭhikā nānākhantikā nānārucikā nānādiṭṭhinissayanissitā. “Lord, there are many contemplatives, brahmans, & wanderers of various sects living around Sāvatthī with differing views, differing opinions, differing beliefs, dependent for support on their differing views….
"Santeke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃvādino evaṃdiṭṭhino – 'sassato attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṃ moghamañña'nti - pe - te bhaṇḍanajātā kalahajātā vivādāpannā aññamaññaṃ mukhasattīhi vitudantā viharanti – 'ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo; nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo"'ti. And they keep on arguing, quarreling, & disputing, wounding one another with weapons of the mouth, saying, ‘The Dhamma is like this, it’s not like that. The Dhamma’s not like that, it’s like this.’”
"Aññatitthiyā, bhikkhave, paribbājakā andhā acakkhukā. “Monks, the wanderers of other sects are blind & eyeless.
Te atthaṃ na jānanti anatthaṃ na jānanti, dhammaṃ na jānanti adhammaṃ na jānanti. They don’t know what is beneficial and what is harmful. They don’t know what is the Dhamma and what is non-Dhamma.
Te atthaṃ ajānantā anatthaṃ ajānantā, dhammaṃ ajānantā adhammaṃ ajānantā bhaṇḍanajātā kalahajātā vivādāpannā aññamaññaṃ mukhasattīhi vitudantā viharanti – 'ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo; nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo"'ti. Not knowing what is beneficial and what is harmful, not knowing what is Dhamma and what is non-Dhamma, they keep on arguing, quarreling, & disputing, wounding one another with weapons of the mouth, saying, ‘The Dhamma is like this, it’s not like that. The Dhamma’s not like that, it’s like this.’”
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
"Ahaṅkārapasutāyaṃ pajā, paraṃkārūpasaṃhitā; People are intent on the idea of ‘I-making’ and attached to the idea of ‘other-making.’
Etadeke nābbhaññaṃsu, na naṃ sallanti addasuṃ. Some don’t realize this, nor do they see it as an arrow.
"Etañca sallaṃ paṭikacca [paṭigacca (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)] passato; But to one who, having extracted this arrow, sees,
Ahaṃ karomīti na tassa hoti; [the thought] ‘I am doing,’1 doesn’t occur;
Paro karotīti na tassa hoti. ‘Another is doing,’ doesn’t occur.
"Mānupetā ayaṃ pajā, mānaganthā mānavinibaddhā [mānavinibandhā (sī.)] ; This human race is possessed by conceit bound by conceit, tied down by conceit.
Diṭṭhīsu sārambhakathā, saṃsāraṃ nātivattatī"ti. chaṭṭhaṃ; Speaking hurtfully because of their views they don’t go beyond the wandering-on.
