42.Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī at Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
Atha kho āyasmā ānando sāyanhasamayaṃ paṭisallānā [paṭisallāṇā (sī.)] vuṭṭhito yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.
Then Ven. Ānanda, emerging from his seclusion in the late afternoon, went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side.
Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – "acchariyaṃ, bhante, abbhutaṃ, bhante!
As he was sitting there he said to the Blessed One, “It’s amazing, sir. It’s astounding–
Yāva appāyukā hi, bhante, bhagavato mātā ahosi, sattāhajāte bhagavati bhagavato mātā kālamakāsi, tusitaṃ kāyaṃ upapajjī"ti.
how short-lived the Blessed One’s mother was. Seven days after the Blessed One’s birth she died and reappeared among the Contented [Tusita] (deva-) group.”
"Evametaṃ, ānanda [evametaṃ ānanda evametaṃ ānanda (syā.)], appāyukā hi, ānanda, bodhisattamātaro honti.
“That’s the way it is, Ānanda. That’s the way it is, for the mothers of bodhisattas are short-lived.
Sattāhajātesu bodhisattesu bodhisattamātaro kālaṃ karonti, tusitaṃ kāyaṃ upapajjantī"ti.
Seven days after the bodhisattas’ birth, the bodhisattas’ mothers pass away and reappear among the Contented (deva-) group.”
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi –
Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
"Ye keci bhūtā bhavissanti ye vāpi,
Those who have come to be, those who will be:
Sabbe gamissanti pahāya dehaṃ;
All will go, leaving the body behind.
Taṃ sabbajāniṃ kusalo viditvā,
The skillful person, realizing the loss of all,
Ātāpiyo brahmacariyaṃ careyyā"ti. dutiyaṃ;
should live the holy life ardently.
