61."Purimā, bhikkhave, koṭi na paññāyati avijjāya – 'ito pubbe avijjā nāhosi, atha pacchā samabhavī'ti.
|
"Bhikkhus, this is said: 'A first point of ignorance, bhikkhus, is not seen such that before this there was no ignorance and afterward it came into being.2081
|
|
Evañcetaṃ, bhikkhave, vuccati, atha ca pana paññāyati – 'idappaccayā avijjā'ti.
|
Still, ignorance is seen to have a specific condition."
|
|
"Avijjampāhaṃ [avijjampahaṃ (sī. syā.)], bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
I say, bhikkhus, that ignorance has a nutriment;2082 it is not without nutriment.
|

Ko cāhāro avijjāya?
|
And what is the nutriment for ignorance?
|
|
'Pañca nīvaraṇā'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: the five hindrances.
|
|
Pañcapāhaṃ, bhikkhave, nīvaraṇe sāhāre vadāmi, no anāhāre.
|
The five hindrances, too,I say, have a nutriment; they are not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro pañcannaṃ nīvaraṇānaṃ?
|
And what is the nutriment for the five hindrances?
|
|
'Tīṇi duccaritānī'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: the three kinds of misconduct.
|
|
Tīṇipāhaṃ, bhikkhave, duccaritāni sāhārāni vadāmi, no anāhārāni.
|
The three kinds of misconduct, too, I say, have a nutriment; they are not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro tiṇṇaṃ duccaritānaṃ?
|
And what is the nutriment for the three kinds of misconduct?
|
|
'Indriyaasaṃvaro'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: non-restraint of the sense faculties.
|
|
Indriyaasaṃvarampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Nonrestraint of the sense faculties, too, I say, has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro indriyaasaṃvarassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for non-restraint of the sense faculties?
|
|
'Asatāsampajañña'ntissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: lack of mindfulness and clear comprehension.
|
|
Asatāsampajaññampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Lack of mindfulness and clear comprehension, too, I say, has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro asatāsampajaññassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for lack of mindfulness and clear comprehension?
|
|
'Ayonisomanasikāro'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: careless attention.
|
|
Ayonisomanasikārampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Careless attention, too, I say, has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro ayonisomanasikārassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for careless attention?
|
|
'Assaddhiya'ntissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: lack of faith.
|
|
Assaddhiyampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Lack of faith, too, I say, has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro assaddhiyassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for lack of faith?
|
|
'Asaddhammassavana'ntissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: not hearing the good Dhamma.
|
|
Asaddhammassavanampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Not hearing the good Dhamma, too, I say, has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro asaddhammassavanassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for not hearing the good Dhamma?
|
|
'Asappurisasaṃsevo'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: not associating with good persons.2083
|
|
"Iti kho, bhikkhave, asappurisasaṃsevo paripūro asaddhammassavanaṃ paripūreti, asaddhammassavanaṃ paripūraṃ assaddhiyaṃ paripūreti, assaddhiyaṃ paripūraṃ ayonisomanasikāraṃ paripūreti, ayonisomanasikāro paripūro asatāsampajaññaṃ paripūreti, asatāsampajaññaṃ paripūraṃ indriyaasaṃvaraṃ paripūreti, indriyaasaṃvaro paripūro tīṇi duccaritāni paripūreti, tīṇi duccaritāni paripūrāni pañca nīvaraṇe paripūrenti, pañca nīvaraṇā paripūrā avijjaṃ paripūrenti.

Thus not associating with good persons, becoming full, fills up not hearing the good Dhamma. Not hearing the good Dhamma, becoming full, fills up lack of faith. Lack of faith, becoming full, fills up careless attention. Careless attention, becoming full, fills up lack of mindfulness and clear comprehension. Lack of mindfulness and clear comprehension, becoming full, fills up non-restraint of the sense faculties. Non-restraint of the sense faculties, becoming full, fills up the three kinds of misconduct. The three kinds of misconduct, becoming full, fill up the five hindrances. The five hindrances,becoming full, fill up ignorance.

Evametissā avijjāya āhāro hoti, evañca pāripūri.
|
Thus there is nutriment for ignorance, and in this way it becomes full."

"Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, uparipabbate thullaphusitake deve vassante ( ) [(galagalāyante) (sī.), (gaḷagaḷāyante) (syā.)] taṃ udakaṃ yathāninnaṃ pavattamānaṃ pabbatakandarapadarasākhā paripūreti, pabbatakandarapadarasākhā paripūrā kusobbhe [kussubbhe (sī.), kusubbhe (syā.), kusombhe (ka.) a. ni. 3.96] paripūrenti.

Just as, when it is raining and the rain pours down in thick droplets on a mountain top, the water flows down along the slope and fills the clefts, gullies, and creeks;

Kusobbhā paripūrā mahāsobbhe [mahāsombhe (ka.)] paripūrenti, mahāsobbhā paripūrā kunnadiyo paripūrenti, kunnadiyo paripūrā mahānadiyo paripūrenti, mahānadiyo paripūrā mahāsamuddaṃ sāgaraṃ paripūrenti; evametassa mahāsamuddassa sāgarassa āhāro hoti, evañca pāripūri.

these, becoming full, fill up the pools; these, becoming full, fill up the lakes; these, becoming full, fill up the streams; these, becoming full, fill up the rivers; and these, becoming full, fill up the great ocean; thus there is nutriment for the great ocean, and in this way it becomes full.

So too, not associating with good persons, becoming full, fills up not hearing the good Dhamma... The five hindrances, becoming full, fill up ignorance. Thus there is nutriment for ignorance, and in this way it becomes full."

"Vijjāvimuttimpāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
I say, bhikkhus, that (1) true knowledge and liberation have a nutriment; they are not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro vijjāvimuttiyā?
|
And what is the nutriment for true knowledge and liberation?
|
|
'Satta bojjhaṅgā'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said:(2) the seven factors of enlightenment.
|
|
Sattapāhaṃ, bhikkhave, bojjhaṅge sāhāre vadāmi, no anāhāre.
|
The seven factors of enlightenment, too, I say, have a nutriment; they are not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro sattannaṃ bojjhaṅgānaṃ?
|
And what is the nutriment for the seven factors of enlightenment?
|
|
'Cattāro satipaṭṭhānā'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should1 be said: (3) the four establishments of mindfulness.
|
|
Cattāropāhaṃ, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhāne sāhāre vadāmi, no anāhāre.
|
The four establishments of mindfulness, too,I say, have a nutriment; they are not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro catunnaṃ satipaṭṭhānānaṃ?
|
And what is the nutriment for the four establishments of mindfulness?
|
|
'Tīṇi sucaritānī'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: (4) the three kinds of good conduct.
|
|
Tīṇipāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sucaritāni sāhārāni vadāmi, no anāhārāni.
|
The three kinds of good conduct, too, I say, have a nutriment; they are not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro tiṇṇaṃ sucaritānaṃ?
|
And what is the nutriment for the three kinds of good conduct?
|
|
'Indriyasaṃvaro'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: (5) restraint of the sense faculties.
|
|
Indriyasaṃvarampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Restraint of the sense faculties, too, I say,has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro indriyasaṃvarassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for restraint of the sense faculties?
|
|
'Satisampajañña'ntissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said:(6) mindfulness and clear comprehension.
|
|
Satisampajaññampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Mindfulness and clear comprehension, too, I say, have a nutriment; they are not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro satisampajaññassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for mindfulness and clear comprehension?
|
|
'Yonisomanasikāro'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: (7) careful attention.
|
|
Yonisomanasikārampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Careful attention, too, I say, has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro yonisomanasikārassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for careful attention?
|
|
'Saddhā'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: (8) faith.
|
|
Saddhampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Faith, too, I say, has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro saddhāya ?
|
And what is the nutriment for faith?
|
|
'Saddhammassavana'ntissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: (9) hearing the good Dhamma.
|
|
Saddhammassavanampāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṃ vadāmi, no anāhāraṃ.
|
Hearing the good Dhamma, too, I say, has a nutriment; it is not without nutriment.
|
|
Ko cāhāro saddhammassavanassa?
|
And what is the nutriment for hearing the good Dhamma?
|
|
'Sappurisasaṃsevo'tissa vacanīyaṃ.
|
It should be said: (10) associating with good persons."
|
|
"Iti kho, bhikkhave, sappurisasaṃsevo paripūro saddhammassavanaṃ paripūreti, saddhammassavanaṃ paripūraṃ saddhaṃ paripūreti, saddhā paripūrā yonisomanasikāraṃ paripūreti, yonisomanasikāro paripūro satisampajaññaṃ paripūreti, satisampajaññaṃ paripūraṃ indriyasaṃvaraṃ paripūreti, indriyasaṃvaro paripūro tīṇi sucaritāni paripūreti, tīṇi sucaritāni paripūrāni cattāro satipaṭṭhāne paripūrenti, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā paripūrā satta bojjhaṅge paripūrenti, satta bojjhaṅgā paripūrā vijjāvimuttiṃ paripūrenti; evametissā vijjāvimuttiyā āhāro hoti, evañca pāripūri.

Thus associating with good persons, becoming full, fills up hearing the good Dhamma. Hearing the good Dhamma, becoming full, fills up faith. Faith, becoming full, fills up careful attention. Careful attention, becoming full, fills up mindfulness and clear comprehension. Mindfulness and clear comprehension, becoming full, fill up restraint of the sense faculties. Restraint of the sense faculties, becoming full, fills up the three kinds of good conduct. The three kinds of good conduct, becoming full, fill up the four establishments of mindfulness. The four establishments of mindfulness, becoming full, fill up the seven factors of enlightenment. The seven factors of enlightenment, becoming full, fill up true knowledge and liberation. Thus there,is nutriment for true knowledge and liberation, and in this way they become full."
