Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
|
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery.
|
I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
|
|
Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṃ jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi.
|
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, “Good sir, how did you cross the flood?”
|
Then a certain devatā, in the far extreme of the night, her extreme radiance lighting up the entirety of Jeta’s Grove, went to the Blessed One. On arrival, having bowed down to him, she stood to one side.

|
Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – "'kathaṃ nu tvaṃ, mārisa, oghamatarī'ti?
|
“Neither standing nor swimming, sir, I crossed the flood.”
|
As she was standing there, she said to him, “Tell me, dear sir, how you crossed over the flood.”
|
|
'Appatiṭṭhaṃ khvāhaṃ, āvuso, anāyūhaṃ oghamatari'nti.
|
“But in what way did you cross the flood neither standing nor swimming?”
|
“I crossed over the flood without pushing forward, without staying in place.”
|
|
'Yathā kathaṃ pana tvaṃ, mārisa, appatiṭṭhaṃ anāyūhaṃ oghamatarī'ti?
|
“When I stood still, I went under.
|
“But how, dear sir, did you cross over the flood without pushing forward, without staying in place?”
|
|
'Yadākhvāhaṃ, āvuso, santiṭṭhāmi tadāssu saṃsīdāmi ; yadākhvāhaṃ, āvuso, āyūhāmi tadāssu nibbuyhāmi [nivuyhāmi (syā. kaṃ. ka.)].
|
And when I swam, I was swept away.
|
“When I pushed forward, I was whirled about. When I stayed in place, I sank.
|
|
Evaṃ khvāhaṃ, āvuso, appatiṭṭhaṃ anāyūhaṃ oghamatari"'nti.
|
That’s how I crossed the flood neither standing nor swimming.”
|
And so I crossed over the flood without pushing forward, without staying in place.”
|
|
"Cirassaṃ vata passāmi, brāhmaṇaṃ parinibbutaṃ;
|
“After a long time I see a brahmin extinguished.
|
“At long last I see a brahman, totally unbound,
|
|
Appatiṭṭhaṃ anāyūhaṃ, tiṇṇaṃ loke visattika"nti. –
|
Neither standing nor swimming,
|
who without pushing forward, without staying in place, has crossed over the entanglements of the world.”
|
|
Idamavoca sā devatā.
|
he’s crossed over clinging to the world.”
|
That is what the devatā said.
|
|
Samanuñño satthā ahosi.
|
This is what that deity said, and the teacher approved.
|
The Teacher approved.
|
|
Atha kho sā devatā – "samanuñño me satthā"ti bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā tatthevantaradhāyīti.
|
Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
|
Realizing that “The Teacher has approved of me,” she bowed down to him, circumambulated him—keeping him to her right—and then vanished right there.
