Комментарий к оставшимся из ornament: "He praises one person face to face": right in front of a friend, he praises his conduct, his abode, his learning, etc.
"He criticizes the same person behind his back": by revealing something he did that should have been kept secret or some other unvirtuous thing about him, behind his back, he criticizes him.
