Comm. KT: “Returning ahead”: If the village is near or if there is a sick monk at the residence, (the student) should return first from the village. If the village is far and there is no one returning with the preceptor, (the student) should set out from the village with him. Then, having wrapped the bowl with the robe, he should return ahead, starting from (somewhere) along the road. Thus, returning first, he should perform all the duties, such as laying out the seat.
