Tato cakkanassa bhātā "gaccha tāta khettaṃ āhiṇḍāhī"ti cakkanaṃ pesesi.

Then Cakkana's brother sent him, saying, "Go, dear, and hunt in the field."
|

So tattha gato.
|
He went there.
|

Tasmiñca samaye eko saso taruṇasassaṃ khādituṃ āgato hoti, so taṃ disvā vegena dhāvento valliyā baddho "kiri kirī"ti saddamakāsi.
|
On that occasion a hare had come to eat the young corn. On seeing him it bolted swiftly, but it got entangled in a creeper and squealed "kiri, kiri."

В то время пришёл заяц, чтобы поесть молодые колосья. Увидев Чаккану он быстро побежал, но запутался в лиане и издал звук "кири, кири".

Cakkano tena saddena gantvā taṃ gahetvā cintesi "mātu bhesajjaṃ karomī"ti.
|
Guided by the sound, Cakkana went and caught it, thinking, "I will make medicine for my mother."
|
Чаккана пошёл на звук и поймал его с мыслью: "Я сделаю лекарство для матери".
|

|
Puna cintesi "na metaṃ patirūpaṃ, yvāhaṃ mātu jīvitakāraṇā paraṃ jīvitā voropeyya"nti.
|
Then he thought again, "This is not proper for me, that I should deprive another of life for the sake of my mother's life."
|
Затем он снова подумал: "Для меня не подобает лишать жизни другого ради жизни моей матери".

|
Atha naṃ "gaccha araññe sasehi saddhiṃ tiṇodakaṃ paribhuñjā"ti muñci.
|
So he released it, saying "Go and enjoy the grass and the water with the other hares in the forest."
|
И тогда Чаккана отпустил зайца со словами: "Иди, питайся травой и водой вместе с другими зайцами в лесу".

Bhātarā ca "kiṃ tāta saso laddho"ti pucchito taṃ pavattiṃ ācikkhi.
|
When his brother asked him, "Did you get a hare, dear? " he told him what had happened.
|
Когда брат спросил его: "Милый, ты достал зайца?" тот рассказал ему о произошедшем.

Tato naṃ bhātā paribhāsi.
|
His brother scolded him.
|
Брат стал его поносить.
|
|
|
So mātusantikaṃ gantvā "yatohaṃ jāto, nābhijānāmi sañcicca pāṇaṃ jīvitā voropetā"ti saccaṃ vatvā adhiṭṭhāsi.
|
He went to his mother and determined upon an asseveration of truth: "Since I was born I am not aware that I have ever intentionally deprived a living being of life."
|
Он (Чаккана) отправился к матери и с устремлением произнёс "заклятие правдой": "С момента моего рождения не помню, что намеренно лишил жизни живое существо".

Tāvadevassa mātā arogā ahosi.
|
Straightaway his mother became well.
|
Его мать немедленно выздоровела.
