Ettāvatā kiṃ kathitaṃ hoti?
What has been explained so far?
Vaṭṭakathā kathitā hoti.
The round of existence has been explained.
Bhagavā hi vaṭṭakathaṃ kathento katthaci avijjāsīsena kathesi, katthaci taṇhāsīsena, katthaci diṭṭhisīsena.
For the Exalted One sometimes explains the round under the heading of ignorance, sometimes under the heading of craving, and sometimes under the heading of views.
Tattha "purimā, bhikkhave, koṭi nappaññāyati avijjāya, 'ito pubbe avijjā nāhosi, atha pacchā samabhavī'ti.
Therein, in the passage: “Bhikkhus, no first point of ignorance is discerned, : ‘Before this there was no ignorance, afterwards it came into being.’
Evañcidaṃ, bhikkhave, vuccati.
of which it could be said (above).
Atha ca pana paññāyati idappaccayā avijjā"ti (a. ni. 10.61) evaṃ avijjāsīsena kathitā.
Nevertheless, ignorance has a specific condition” (AN 10:61/AV 115)—the round is explained under the heading of ignorance.
"Purimā, bhikkhave, koṭi nappaññāyati bhavataṇhāya, 'ito pubbe bhavataṇhā nāhosi, atha pacchā samabhavī'ti.
In the passage: “Bhikkhus, no first point of the craving for existence is discerned, :‘Before this there was no craving for existence, afterwards it came into being.’
Evañcidaṃ, bhikkhave, vuccati.
of which it could be said (above).
Atha ca pana paññāyati idappaccayā bhavataṇhā"ti (a. ni. 10.62) evaṃ taṇhāsīsena kathitā.
Nevertheless, the craving for existence has as pecific condition” (AN 10:62/A V 116)—the round is explained under the heading of craving.
"Purimā, bhikkhave, koṭi nappaññāyati bhavadiṭṭhiyā, 'ito pubbe bhavadiṭṭhi nāhosi, atha pacchā samabhavī'ti, evañcidaṃ, bhikkhave, vuccati.
In the passage:“Bhikkhus, no first point of the view of existence is discerned,of which it could be said: ‘Before this there was no view of existence, afterwards it came into being.’
Atha ca pana paññāyati idappaccayā bhavadiṭṭhī"ti evaṃ diṭṭhisīsena kathitā.
Nevertheless, the view of existence has a specific condition” (untraced)—the round is explained under the heading of views.
Idhāpi diṭṭhisīseneva kathitā.
Here, too, the round is explained under the heading of views.
