Parassa mammacchedakakāyavacīpayogasamuṭṭhāpikā ekantapharusacetanā pharusāvācā. Tassā āvibhāvatthamidaṃ vatthu – eko kira dārako mātuvacanaṃ anādiyitvā araññaṃ gacchati, taṃ mātā nivattetumasakkontī – "caṇḍā taṃ mahiṃsī anubandhatū"ti akkosi. Athassa tatheva araññe mahiṃsī uṭṭhāsi. Dārako "yaṃ mama mātā mukhena kathesi, taṃ mā hotu, yaṃ cittena cintesi taṃ hotū"ti, saccakiriyamakāsi. Mahiṃsī tattheva baddhā viya aṭṭhāsi. Evaṃ mammacchedakopi payogo cittasaṇhatāya na pharusā vācā hoti. Mātāpitaro hi kadāci puttake evaṃ vadanti – "corā vo khaṇḍākhaṇḍaṃ karontū"ti, uppalapattampi ca nesaṃ upari patantaṃ na icchanti. Ācariyupajjhāyā ca kadāci nissitake evaṃ vadanti – "kiṃ ime ahirīkā anottappino caranti, niddhamatha ne"ti, atha ca nesaṃ āgamādhigamasampattiṃ icchanti. Yathā ca cittasaṇhatāya pharusā vācā na hoti, evaṃ vacanasaṇhatāya apharusā vācā na hoti. Na hi mārāpetukāmassa – "imaṃ sukhaṃ sayāpethā"ti vacanaṃ apharusā vācā hoti, cittapharusatāya panesā pharusā vācāva. Sā yaṃ sandhāya pavattitā, tassa appaguṇatāya appasāvajjā, mahāguṇatāya mahāsāvajjā. Tassā tayo sambhārā – akkositabbo paro, kupitacittaṃ, akkosanāti.

Parassa mammacchedakakāyavacīpayogasamuṭṭhāpikā ekantapharusacetanā pharusāvācā. [Having abandoned harsh speech] “Harsh speech” is the definitely harsh volition occasioning bodily or vocal effort that cuts into the quick of another’s heart.
Tassā āvibhāvatthamidaṃ vatthu – eko kira dārako mātuvacanaṃ anādiyitvā araññaṃ gacchati, taṃ mātā nivattetumasakkontī – "caṇḍā taṃ mahiṃsī anubandhatū"ti akkosi.
Athassa tatheva araññe mahiṃsī uṭṭhāsi.
Dārako "yaṃ mama mātā mukhena kathesi, taṃ mā hotu, yaṃ cittena cintesi taṃ hotū"ti, saccakiriyamakāsi.

Evaṃ mammacchedakopi payogo cittasaṇhatāya na pharusā vācā hoti. Though there is such effort cutting into the quick of another's heart, it does not count as harsh speech when it is backed by tenderness of mind.
Mātāpitaro hi kadāci puttake evaṃ vadanti – "corā vo khaṇḍākhaṇḍaṃ karontū"ti, uppalapattampi ca nesaṃ upari patantaṃ na icchanti. For parents sometimes tell their children: “May robbers cut you into bits!” But in truth they do not want even a lotus leaf to fall on them.
Ācariyupajjhāyā ca kadāci nissitake evaṃ vadanti – "kiṃ ime ahirīkā anottappino caranti, niddhamatha ne"ti, atha ca nesaṃ āgamādhigamasampattiṃ icchanti. And preceptors and teachers sometimes say to their pupils: "What is the use with you shameless rascals. Get out!” Yet they wish their success in study and spiritual achievement.
Yathā ca cittasaṇhatāya pharusā vācā na hoti, evaṃ vacanasaṇhatāya apharusā vācā na hoti.
Na hi mārāpetukāmassa – "imaṃ sukhaṃ sayāpethā"ti vacanaṃ apharusā vācā hoti, cittapharusatāya panesā pharusā vācāva.
Sā yaṃ sandhāya pavattitā, tassa appaguṇatāya appasāvajjā, mahāguṇatāya mahāsāvajjā. Harsh speech is less blameworthy when the person at whom it is directed is of inferior moral qualities, more blameworthy when the person is of superior moral qualities.
Tassā tayo sambhārā – akkositabbo paro, kupitacittaṃ, akkosanāti. There are three components: a person to he abused, an angry mind, and the act of abusing.
