"Bhikkhus, suppose that ths great earth had become one mass of water,

Tatra puriso ekacchiggaḷaṃ yugaṃ pakkhipeyya.

and a man would throw a yoke with a single hole upon it.
|

|
Tamenaṃ puratthimo vāto pacchimena saṃhareyya, pacchimo vāto puratthimena saṃhareyya, uttaro vāto dakkhiṇena saṃhareyya, dakkhiṇo vāto uttarena saṃhareyya.
|
An easterly wind would drive it westward; a westerly would drive it eastward; a northerly wind would drive it southward; a southerly wind would drive it northward.

Taṃ kiṃ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu kho kāṇo kacchapo vassasatassa vassasatassa accayena sakiṃ sakiṃ ummujjanto amusmiṃ ekacchiggaḷe yuge gīvaṃ paveseyyā"ti?

What do you think, bhikkhus, would that blhd hrtle, coming to the surface once every hundred years, [457] insert its neck into that yoke with a single hole? "

"Adhiccamidaṃ, bhante, yaṃ so kāṇo kacchapo vassasatassa vassasatassa accayena sakiṃ sakiṃ ummujjanto amusmiṃ ekacchiggaḷe yuge gīvaṃ paveseyyā"ti.

"It would be by chance, venerable sir, that that blind turtle, coming to the surface once every hundred years. would insert its neck into that yoke with a single hole."
