Tena kho pana samayena sambahulehi bhikkhūhi bhagavato santike aññā byākatā hoti – "khīṇā jāti, vusitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ, nāparaṃ itthattāyāti pajānāmā"ti.

Now on that occasion a number of bhikkhus had declared final knowledge in the presence of the Blessed One, saying: "We understand: Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being."

Assosi kho āyasmā susimo – "sambahulehi kira bhikkhūhi bhagavato santike aññā byākatā – 'khīṇā jāti, vusitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ, nāparaṃ itthattāyā'ti pajānāmā"ti.

The Venerable Susima heard about this,

Atha kho āyasmā susimo yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā tehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ sammodi.
|
so he approached those bhikkhus,
|
|
|
Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.
|
|
|
|
Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā susimo te bhikkhū etadavoca – "saccaṃ kirāyasmantehi bhagavato santike aññā byākatā – 'khīṇā jāti, vusitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ, nāparaṃ itthattāyā'ti pajānāmā"ti?

exchanged greetings with them, and then sat down to one side and said to them: "Is it true that you venerable ones have declared final knowledge in the presence of the Blessed One, saying: 'We understand: Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being'?"
