326.Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ apalokesi.
|
The Blessed One looked at the venerable Ananda.
|

Atha kho āyasmā ānando bodhiṃ rājakumāraṃ etadavoca – "saṃharatu, rājakumāra, dussāni; na bhagavā celapaṭikaṃ [celapattikaṃ (sī. pī.)] akkamissati.
|
The venerable Ananda said to Prince Bodhi: "Prince, let the cloth be removed. The Blessed One will not step on a strip of cloth;
|
|
|
Pacchimaṃ janataṃ tathāgato anukampatī"ti [apaloketīti (sabbattha)].
|
the Tathagata has regard for future generations."818
|
|
|
Atha kho bodhi rājakumāro dussāni saṃharāpetvā uparikokanadapāsāde [uparikokanade pāsāde (sī. pī. vinayeca), uparikokanade (syā. kaṃ.)] āsanāni paññapesi.
|
8. So Prince Bodhi had the cloth removed, and he had seats prepared in the upper apartments of the Kokanada Palace.

Atha kho bhagavā kokanadaṃ pāsādaṃ abhiruhitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi saddhiṃ bhikkhusaṅghena.
|
The Blessed One and the Sangha of bhikkhus ascended the Kokanada Palace and sat down on the seats that had been prepared.
|
|

Atha kho bodhi rājakumāro buddhappamukhaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.
|
9. Then, with his own hands, Prince Bodhi served and satisfied the Sangha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha with the various kinds of good food.

Atha kho bodhi rājakumāro bhagavantaṃ bhuttāviṃ onītapattapāṇiṃ aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.
|
When the Blessed One had eaten and had withdrawn his hand from the bowl, Prince Bodhi took a low seat, sat down at one side,
|

Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho bodhi rājakumāro bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – "mayhaṃ kho, bhante, evaṃ hoti – 'na kho sukhena sukhaṃ adhigantabbaṃ, dukkhena kho sukhaṃ adhigantabba"'nti.

and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, we have thought thus: 'Pleasure is not to be gained through pleasure; pleasure is to be gained through pain.'"819
