Tattha taṇhācaritā sattā sattasaññābhiniviṭṭhā anuppādavayadassino. 1043. Herein, creatures of craving temperament have insisted upon perception of creatures and do not see rise and subsidence;
Te pañcasu khandhesu attānaṃ samanupassanti "rūpavantaṃ vā attānaṃ, attani vā rūpaṃ, rūpasmiṃ vā attāna"nti. they see self in the five categories. Some see self as possessed of form or form in self or self in form ;
Evaṃ pañcakkhandhā. that is how they see each of the five categories
Aññehi khandhehi attānaṃ samanupassanti tassa ussannadiṭṭhikā sattā vipassamānā khandhe ujuṃ attato samanupassanti. by means of the other categories (see M. i, 300; also i, 8). But when creatures with pronounced views thereof are exercizing insight, they see the categories directly as self (M i, 300):
Te rūpaṃ attako samanupassanti. they see form as self thus
Yaṃ rūpaṃ, so attā. "What is form is self;
Yo ahaṃ, taṃ rūpaṃ. what I am is form" ;
So rūpavināsaṃ passati, ayaṃ ucchedavādī. and he who 1 sees form's destruction 2 is an annihilationist.
Iti pañcannaṃ khandhānaṃ paṭhamābhinipātā sakkāyadiṭṭhiyo pañca ucchedaṃ bhajanti "taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīra"nti. So the first instances 3 of each of the five categories 4 belong with the annihilation view thus ( What is soul is physical frame ) (M.i, 484),
Ekamekamhi khandhe tīhi padehi pacchimakehi sassataṃ bhajati "aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīra"nti. and with the three last terms in the case of each 5 single category [the instance] belongs to eternalism thus (Soul is one, physical frame another) (M i, 484).
Ito bahiddhāte pabbajitā taṇhācaritā kāmasukhallikānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti. 1044. When those of craving temperament go forth into homelessness outside this [Dispensation] they abide devoted to the pursuit of sensual pleasures.
Tena ye ca nissandena diṭṭhicaritā attakilamathānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti. And those of view temperament with that outcome [i.e. likewise gone forth] abide devoted to the pursuit of self-torment.
Tena yeva diṭṭhisukhena ettāvatā bāhirako payogo. It is owing to that same pleasure in views (cf. M. i, 93; also S. v, 424) that outsiders' range is [only] that much.
