"Yathā vā pana, mahārāja, āturo kiso aṇuparimitakāyo sālakakimi hatthināgaṃ tidhā pabhinnaṃ navāyataṃ tivitthataṃ dasapariṇāhaṃ aṭṭharatanikaṃ sakaṭṭhānamupagataṃ disvā gilituṃ parikaḍḍheyya, api nu kho so, mahārāja, sālakakimi sakkuṇeyya taṃ hatthināgaṃ gilitu"nti?

‘Or again, O king, suppose there were a Sālaka, minute in the measure of its body, and rendered lean by disease, and it on seeing an elephant king, which showed the signs of rut in three places, and was nine cubits in length, and three in breadth, and ten in girth, and seven in height, coming to its lair, were to begin to drag the elephant towards it with the view of swallowing it—now would the Sālaka, O king, be able to do?’

Или, например, государь, если хилая, тощая, крохотная, тщедушная гусеница788 увидит поблизости от себя имеющего на теле три приметы гона, в девять локтей длиною, в три шириною, в десять в обхвате, в восемь высотою матерого слона и поползет к нему, чтобы его проглотить, то сможет ли, государь, эта гусеница проглотить того матерого слона?

‘Certainly not, Sir.’

– Нет, почтенный.

"Kena kāraṇena, mahārājā"ti?

‘But why not, O king?’
|
– Отчего же, государь?

"Parittattā, bhante, sālakakimissa, mahantattā hatthināgassā"ti.
|
‘Because of the minuteness of the Sālaka’s body, and because of the magnitude of the elephant king.’

– Оттого, почтенный, что тело гусеницы мало, а слон велик.
|

"Evameva kho, mahārāja, ūnakasattavassikassa cittaṃ abalaṃ dubbalaṃ parittaṃ appaṃ thokaṃ mandaṃ avibhūtaṃ, mahatī asaṅkhatā nibbānadhātu.
|
‘Just so, O king, the mind of one under seven years of age is powerless and weak, limited, insignificant, obscure, and dull. Grand and transcendental is the ambrosial essence of Nirvāṇa.

– Вот точно так же, государь, сознание менее чем семилетнего дитяти бессильно, слабосильно, мало, немощно, медлительно, ограниченно, неразвито, основа же несложённой нирваны весома, увесиста, огромна и обширна,

So tena dubbalena cittena parittakena mandena avibhūtena na sakkoti mahatiṃ asaṅkhataṃ nibbānadhātuṃ paṭivijjhituṃ, tena kāraṇena ūnakasattavassikassa suppaṭipannassāpi dhammābhisamayo na hotī"ti.

With that mind so powerless and weak, so limited, insignificant, obscure, and dull, he cannot penetrate into the grand and transcendental essence of Nirvāṇa. And that is the reason, O king, why to an infant, one under seven years of age, even though he order his conduct aright, there can be no attainment to insight of the Truth.’

и не сможет менее чем семилетнее дитя своим слабосильным, ограниченным, медлительным и неразвитым сознанием постичь весомую, увесистую, огромную и обширную основу несложённой нирваны. Потому менее чем семилетнее дитя не приходит к постижению Учения, даже если все делает правильно.

"Sādhu, bhante nāgasena, evametaṃ tathā sampaṭicchāmī"ti.
|
‘Very good, Nāgasena! That is so, and I accept it as you say.’
