Kiṃ nu socasīti idaṃ satthā jetavane viharanto ekaṃ daharabhikkhuniṃ ārabbha kathesi. "Large-eyed and peerless one," etc.—This was a story the Master, while sojourning at Jetavana, told of a female novice.
Sā kira sāvatthiyaṃ kuladhītā gharāvāse ādīnavaṃ disvā sāsane pabbajitvā ekadivasaṃ bhikkhunīhi saddhiṃ dhammasavanāya gantvā alaṅkatadhammāsane nisīditvā dhammaṃ desentassa dasabalassa aparimāṇapuññapabhāvābhinibbattaṃ uttamarūpasampattiyuttaṃ attabhāvaṃ oloketvā "pariciṇṇapubbā nu kho me bhavasmiṃ vicarantiyā imassa mahāpurisassa pādaparicārikā"ti cintesi. A girl of good family at Sāvatthi, they say, recognizing the misery of the lay life, embraced asceticism, and one day went with other Sisters to hear the Law from the Bodhisatta, as he sat preaching from a magnificent throne, and observing his person to be endued with extreme beauty of form arising from the power of illimitable merit, she thought, "I wonder whether in a former existence those I once ministered to were this man's wives."
Athassā taṅkhaṇaññeva jātissarañāṇaṃ uppajji – "chaddantavāraṇakāle ahaṃ imassa mahāpurisassa pādaparicārikā bhūtapubbā"ti. Then at that very moment the recollection of former existences came back to her. "In the time of Chaddanta, the elephant, I was previously existing as this man's wife."
Athassā sarantiyā mahantaṃ pītipāmojjaṃ uppajji. And at the remembrance great joy and gladness sprang up in her heart.
Sā pītivegena mahāhasitaṃ hasitvā puna cintesi – "pādaparicārikā nāma sāmikānaṃ hitajjhāsayā appakā, ahitajjhāsayāva bahutarā, hitajjhāsayā nu kho ahaṃ imassa mahāpurisassa ahosiṃ, ahitajjhāsayā"ti. In her joyous excitement she laughed aloud as she thought, "Few wives are well disposed to their husbands; most of them are ill disposed. I wonder if I were well or ill disposed to this man."
Sā anussaramānā "ahaṃ appamattakaṃ dosaṃ hadaye ṭhapetvā vīsaratanasatikaṃ chaddantamahāgajissaraṃ sonuttaraṃ nāma nesādaṃ pesetvā visapītasallena vijjhāpetvā jīvitakkhayaṃ pāpesi"nti addasa. And calling back her remembrance, she perceived that she had harboured a slight grudge in her heart against Chaddanta, the mighty lord of elephants, who measured one hundred and twenty cubits, and had sent Sonuttara, a hunter, who with a poisoned arrow wounded and killed him.
Athassā soko udapādi, hadayaṃ uṇhaṃ ahosi, sokaṃ sandhāretuṃ asakkontī assasitvā passasitvā mahāsaddena parodi. Then her sorrow awoke and her heart grew hot within her, and being unable to control her feelings, bursting into sobs she wept aloud.
Taṃ disvā satthā sitaṃ pātu karitvā "ko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo sitassa pātukammāyā"ti bhikkhusaṅghena puṭṭho "bhikkhave, ayaṃ daharabhikkhunī pubbe mayi kataṃ aparādhaṃ saritvā rodatī"ti vatvā atītaṃ āhari. On Seeing this the Master broke into a smile, and on being asked by the assembly of the Brethren, "What, Sir, was the cause of your smiling?" he said, "Brethren, this young Sister wept, on recalling a sin she once committed against me." And so saying he told a story of the past.
Atīte himavantapadese chaddantadahaṃ upanissāya aṭṭhasahassā hatthināgā vasiṃsu iddhimantā vehāsaṅgamā.
Tadā bodhisatto jeṭṭhakavāraṇassa putto hutvā nibbatti, so sabbaseto ahosi rattamukhapādo.
So aparabhāge vuddhippatto aṭṭhāsītihatthubbedho ahosi vīsaratanasatāyāmo.
Aṭṭhapaṇṇāsahatthāya rajatadāmasadisāya soṇḍāya samannāgato.
Dantā panassa parikkhepato pannarasahatthā ahesuṃ dīghato tiṃsahatthā chabbaṇṇaraṃsīhi samannāgatā.
So aṭṭhannaṃ nāgasahassānaṃ jeṭṭhako ahosi, pañcasate paccekabuddhe pūjesi.
Tassa dve aggamahesiyo ahesuṃ – cūḷasubhaddā, mahāsubhaddā cāti.
Nāgarājā aṭṭhanāgasahassaparivāro kañcanaguhāyaṃ vasati.
So pana chaddantadaho āyāmato ca vitthārato ca paṇṇāsayojano hoti.
Tassa majjhe dvādasayojanappamāṇe ṭhāne sevālo vā paṇakaṃ vā natthi, maṇikkhandhavaṇṇaudakameva santiṭṭhati, tadanantaraṃ yojanavitthataṃ suddhaṃ kallahāravanaṃ, taṃ udakaṃ parikkhipitvā ṭhitaṃ, tadanantaraṃ yojanavitthatameva suddhaṃ nīluppalavanaṃ taṃ parikkhipitvā ṭhitaṃ, tato yojanayojanavitthatāneva rattuppalasetuppalarattapadumasetapadumakumudavanāni purimaṃ purimaṃ parikkhipitvā ṭhitāni.
Imesaṃ pana sattannaṃ vanānaṃ anantaraṃ sabbesampi tesaṃ kallahārādivanānaṃ vasena omissakavanaṃ yojanavitthatameva tāni parikkhipitvā ṭhitaṃ.
Tadanantaraṃ nāgānaṃ kaṭippamāṇe udake yojanavitthatameva rattasālivanaṃ, tadanantaraṃ udakapariyante yojanavitthatameva nīlapītalohitaodātasurabhisukhumakusumasamākiṇṇaṃ khuddakagacchavanaṃ, iti imāni dasa vanāni yojanavitthatāneva.
Tato khuddakarājamāsamahārājamāsamuggavanaṃ, tadanantaraṃ tipusaelālukalābukumbhaṇḍavallivanāni, tato pūgarukkhappamāṇaṃ ucchuvanaṃ, tato hatthidantappamāṇaphalaṃ kadalivanaṃ, tato sālavanaṃ, tadanantaraṃ cāṭippamāṇaphalaṃ panasavanaṃ, tato madhuraphalaṃ ciñcavanaṃ, tato ambavanaṃ, tato kapiṭṭhavanaṃ, tato omissako mahāvanasaṇḍo, tato veḷuvanaṃ, ayamassa tasmiṃ kāle sampatti.
Saṃyuttaṭṭhakathāyaṃ pana idāni pavattamānasampattiyeva kathitā.
Veḷuvanaṃ pana parikkhipitvā satta pabbatā ṭhitā.
Tesaṃ bāhirantato paṭṭhāya paṭhamo cūḷakāḷapabbato nāma, dutiyo mahākāḷapabbato nāma, tato udakapabbato nāma, tato candimapassapabbato nāma, tato sūriyapassapabbato nāma, tato maṇipassapabbato nāma, sattamo suvaṇṇapassapabbato nāma.
So ubbedhato sattayojaniko chaddantadahaṃ parikkhipitvā pattassa mukhavaṭṭi viya ṭhito.
Tassa abbhantarimaṃ passaṃ suvaṇṇavaṇṇaṃ, tato nikkhantena obhāsena chaddantadaho samuggatabālasūriyo viya hoti.
Bāhirapabbatesu pana eko ubbedhato chayojaniko, eko pañca, eko cattāri, eko tīṇi, eko dve, eko yojaniko, evaṃ sattapabbataparikkhittassa pana tassa dahassa pubbuttarakaṇṇe udakavātappaharaṇokāse mahānigrodharukkho atthi.
Tassa khandho parikkhepato pañcayojaniko, ubbedhato sattayojaniko, catūsu disāsu catasso sākhā chayojanikā, uddhaṃ uggatasākhāpi chayojanikāva, iti so mūlato paṭṭhāya ubbedhena terasayojaniko, sākhānaṃ orimantato yāva pārimantā dvādasayojaniko, aṭṭhahi pārohasahassehi paṭimaṇḍito muṇḍamaṇipabbato viya vilāsamāno tiṭṭhati.
Chaddantadahassa pana pacchimadisābhāge suvaṇṇapassapabbate dvādasayojanikā kañcanaguhā tiṭṭhati.
Chaddanto nāma nāgarājā vassāratte hemante aṭṭhasahassanāgaparivuto kañcanaguhāyaṃ vasati.
Gimhakāle udakavātaṃ sampaṭicchamāno mahānigrodhamūle pārohantare tiṭṭhatī.
Athassa ekadivasaṃ "mahāsālavanaṃ pupphita"nti taruṇanāgā āgantvā ārocayiṃsu.
So saparivāro "sālakīḷaṃ kīḷissāmī"ti sālavanaṃ gantvā ekaṃ supupphitaṃ sālarukkhaṃ kumbhena pahari.
Tadā cūḷasubhaddā paṭivātapasse ṭhitā, tassā sarīre sukkhadaṇḍakamissakāni purāṇapaṇṇāni ceva tambakipillikāni ca patiṃsu.
Mahāsubhaddā adhovātapasse ṭhitā, tassā sarīre pupphareṇukiñjakkhapattāni patiṃsu.
Cūḷasubhaddā "ayaṃ nāgarājā attano piyabhariyāya upari pupphareṇukiñjakkhapattāni pātesi, mama sarīre sukkhadaṇḍakamissāni purāṇapaṇṇāni ceva tambakipillikāni ca pātesi, hotu, kātabbaṃ jānissāmī"ti mahāsatte veraṃ bandhi.
Aparampi divasaṃ nāgarājā saparivāro nhānatthāya chaddantadahaṃ otari.
Atha dve taruṇanāgā soṇḍāhi usirakalāpe gahetvā kelāsakūṭaṃ majjantā viya nhāpesuṃ.
Tasmiṃ nhatvā uttiṇṇe dve kareṇuyo nhāpesuṃ.
Tāpi uttaritvā mahāsattassa santike aṭṭhaṃsu.
Tato aṭṭhasahassanāgāsaraṃ otaritvā udakakīḷaṃ kīḷitvā sarato nānāpupphāni āharitvā rajatathūpaṃ alaṅkarontā viya mahāsattaṃ alaṅkaritvā pacchā dve kareṇuyo alaṅkariṃsu.
Atheko hatthī sare vicaranto sattuddayaṃ nāma mahāpadumaṃ labhitvā āharitvā mahāsattassa adāsi.
So taṃ soṇḍāya gahetvā reṇuṃ kumbhe okiritvā jeṭṭhakāya mahāsubhaddāya adāsi.
Taṃ disvā itarā "idampi sattuddayaṃ mahāpadumaṃ attano piyabhariyāya eva adāsi, na mayha"nti punapi tasmiṃ veraṃ bandhi.
Athekadivasaṃ bodhisatte madhuraphalāni ceva bhisamuḷālāni ca pokkharamadhunā yojetvā pañcasate paccekabuddhe bhojente cūḷasubhaddā attanā laddhaphalāphalaṃ paccekabuddhānaṃ datvā "bhante, ito cavitvā maddarājakule nibbattitvā subhaddā nāma rājakaññā hutvā vayappattā bārāṇasirañño aggamahesibhāvaṃ patvā tassa piyā manāpā taṃ attano ruciṃ kāretuṃ samatthā hutvā tassa ācikkhitvā ekaṃ luddakaṃ pesetvā imaṃ hatthiṃ visapītena sallena vijjhāpetvā jīvitakkhayaṃ pāpetvā chabbaṇṇaraṃsiṃ vissajjente yamakadante āharāpetuṃ samatthā homī"ti patthanaṃ ṭhapesi.
Sā tato paṭṭhāya gocaraṃ aggahetvā sussitvā nacirasseva kālaṃ katvā maddaraṭṭhe rājaaggamahesiyā kucchimhi nibbatti, subhaddātissā nāmaṃ kariṃsu.
Atha naṃ vayappattaṃ bārāṇasirañño adaṃsu.
Sā tassa piyā ahosi manāpā, soḷasannaṃ itthisahassānaṃ jeṭṭhikā hutvā jātissarañāṇañca paṭilabhi.
Sā cintesi – "samiddhā me patthanā, idāni tassa nāgassa yamakadante āharāpessāmī"ti.
Tato sarīraṃ telena makkhetvā kiliṭṭhavatthaṃ nivāsetvā gilānākāraṃ dassetvā sirigabbhaṃ pavisitvā mañcake nipajji.
Rājā "kuhiṃ subhaddā"ti vatvā "gilānā"ti sutvā sirigabbhaṃ pavisitvā mañcake nisīditvā tassā piṭṭhiṃ parimajjanto paṭhamaṃ gāthamāha –
97.
"Kiṃ nu socasinuccaṅgi, paṇḍūsi varavaṇṇini;
Milāyasi visālakkhi, mālāva parimadditā"ti.
Tattha anuccaṅgīti kañcanasannibhasarīre.
Mālāva parimadditāti hatthehi parimadditā padumamālā viya.
Taṃ sutvā sā itaraṃ gāthamāha –
98.
"Dohaḷo me mahārāja, supinantenupajjhagā;
Na so sulabharūpova, yādiso mama dohaḷo"ti.
Tattha na soti yādiso mama supinantenupajjhagā supine passantiyā mayā diṭṭho dohaḷo, so sulabharūpo viya na hoti, dullabho so, mayhaṃ pana taṃ alabhantiyā jīvitaṃ natthīti avaca.
Taṃ sutvā rājā gāthamāha –
99.
"Ye keci mānusā kāmā, idha lokamhi nandane;
Sabbe te pacurā mayhaṃ, ahaṃ te dammi dohaḷa"nti.
Tattha pacurāti bahū sulabhā.
Taṃ sutvā devī, "mahārāja, dullabho mama dohaḷo, na taṃ idāni kathemi, yāvattakā pana te vijite luddā, te sabbe sannipātetha, tesaṃ majjhe kathessāmī"ti dīpentī anantaraṃ gāthamāha –
100.
"Luddā deva samāyantu, ye keci vijite tava;
Etesaṃ ahamakkhissaṃ, yādiso mama dohaḷo"ti.
Rājā "sādhū"ti sirigabbhā nikkhamitvā "yāvatikā tiyojanasatike kāsikaraṭṭhe luddā, tesaṃ sannipātatthāya bheriṃ carāpethā"ti amacce āṇāpesi.
Te tathā akaṃsu.
Nacirasseva kāsiraṭṭhavāsino luddā yathābalaṃ paṇṇākāraṃ gahetvā āgantvā āgatabhāvaṃ rañño ārocāpesuṃ.
Te sabbepi saṭṭhisahassamattā ahesuṃ.
Rājā tesaṃ āgatabhāvaṃ ñatvā vātapāne ṭhito hatthaṃ pasāretvā tesaṃ āgatabhāvaṃ deviyā kathento āha –
101.
"Ime te luddakā devi, katahatthā visāradā;
Vanaññū ca migaññū ca, mamatthe cattajīvitā"ti.
Tattha ime teti ye tvaṃ sannipātāpesi, ime te.
Katahatthāti vijjhanachedanesu katahatthā kusalā susikkhitā.
Visāradāti nibbhayā.
Vanaññū ca migaññū cāti vanāni ca mige ca jānanti.
Mamattheti sabbepi cete mamatthe cattajīvitā, yamahaṃ icchāmi, taṃ karontīti.
Taṃ sutvā devī te āmantetvā itaraṃ gāthamāha –
102.
"Luddaputtā nisāmetha, yāvantettha samāgatā;
Chabbisāṇaṃ gajaṃ setaṃ, addasaṃ supine ahaṃ;
Tassa dantehi me attho, alābhe natthi jīvita"nti.
Tattha nisāmethāti suṇātha.
Chabbisāṇanti chabbaṇṇavisāṇaṃ.
Taṃ sutvā luddaputtā āhaṃsu –
103.
"Na no pitūnaṃ na pitāmahānaṃ, diṭṭho suto kuñjaro chabbisāṇo;
Yamaddasā supine rājaputtī, akkhāhi no yādiso hatthināgo"ti.
Tattha pitūnanti karaṇatthe sāmivacanaṃ.
Idaṃ vuttaṃ hoti – devi neva amhākaṃ pitūhi, na pitāmahehi evarūpo kuñjaro diṭṭhapubbo, pageva amhehi, tasmā attanā diṭṭhalakkhaṇavasena akkhāhi no, yādiso tayā diṭṭho hatthināgoti.
Anantaragāthāpi teheva vuttā –
104.
"Disā catasso vidisā catasso, uddhaṃ adho dasa disā imāyo;
Katamaṃ disaṃ tiṭṭhati nāgarājā, yamaddasā supine chabbisāṇa"nti.
Tattha disāti disāsu.
Katamanti etāsu disāsu katamāya disāyāti.
Evaṃ vutte subhaddā sabbe ludde oloketvā tesaṃ antare patthaṭapādaṃ bhattapuṭasadisajaṅghaṃ mahājāṇukaṃ mahāphāsukaṃ bahalamassutambadāṭhikaṃ nibbiddhapiṅgalaṃ dussaṇṭhānaṃ bībhacchaṃ sabbesaṃ matthakamatthakena paññāyamānaṃ mahāsattassa pubbaveriṃ sonuttaraṃ nāma nesādaṃ disvā "esa mama vacanaṃ kātuṃ sakkhissatī"ti rājānaṃ anujānāpetvā taṃ ādāya sattabhūmikapāsādassa uparimatalaṃ āruyha uttarasīhapañjaraṃ vivaritvā uttarahimavantābhimukhaṃ hatthaṃ pasāretvā catasso gāthā abhāsi –
105.
"Ito ujuṃ uttariyaṃ disāyaṃ, atikkamma so satta girī brahmante;
Suvaṇṇapasso nāma girī uḷāro, supupphito kimpurisānuciṇṇo.
106.
"Āruyha selaṃ bhavanaṃ kinnarānaṃ, olokaya pabbatapādamūlaṃ;
Atha dakkhasī meghasamānavaṇṇaṃ, nigrodharājaṃ aṭṭhasahassapādaṃ.
107.
"Tatthacchatī kuñjaro chabbisāṇo, sabbaseto duppasaho parebhi;
Rakkhanti naṃ aṭṭhasahassanāgā, īsādantā vātajavappahārino.
108.
"Tiṭṭhanti te tumūlaṃ passasantā, kuppanti vātassapi eritassa;
Manussabhūtaṃ pana tattha disvā, bhasmaṃ kareyyuṃ nāssa rajopi tassā"ti.
Tattha itoti imamhā ṭhānā.
Uttariyanti uttarāya.
Uḷāroti mahā itarehi chahi pabbatehi uccataro.
Olokayāti ālokeyyāsi.
Tatthacchatīti tasmiṃ nigrodhamūle gimhasamaye udakavātaṃ sampaṭicchanto tiṭṭhati.
Duppasahoti aññe taṃ upagantvā pasayhakāraṃ kātuṃ samatthā nāma natthīti duppasaho parebhi.
Īsādantāti rathīsāya samānadantā.
Vātajavappahārinoti vātajavena gantvā paccāmitte paharaṇasīlā evarūpā aṭṭhasahassanāgā nāgarājānaṃ rakkhanti.
Tumūlanti bhiṃsanakaṃ mahāsaddānubandhaṃ assāsaṃ muñcantā tiṭṭhanti.
Eritassāti vātapaharitassa yaṃ saddānubandhaṃ eritaṃ calanaṃ kampanaṃ, tassapi kuppanti, evaṃpharusā te nāgā.
Nāssāti tassa nāsavātena viddhaṃsetvā bhasmaṃ katassa tassa rajopi na bhaveyyāti.
Taṃ sutvā sonuttaro maraṇabhayabhīto āha –
109.
"Bahū hime rājakulamhi santi, piḷandhanā jātarūpassa devi;
Muttā maṇī veḷuriyāmayā ca, kiṃ kāhasi dantapiḷandhanena;
Māretukāmā kuñjaraṃ chabbisāṇaṃ, udāhu ghātessasi luddaputte"ti.
Tattha piḷandhanāti ābharaṇāni.
Veḷuriyāmayāti veḷuriyamayāni.
Ghātessasīti udāhu piḷandhanāpadesena luddaputte ghātāpetukāmāsīti pucchati.
Tato devī gāthamāha –
110.
"Sā issitā dukkhitā casmi ludda, uddhañca sussāmi anussarantī;
Karohi me luddaka etamatthaṃ, dassāmi te gāmavarāni pañcā"ti.
Tattha sāti sā ahaṃ.
Anussarantīti tena vāraṇena pure mayi kataṃ veraṃ anussaramānā.
Dassāmi teti etasmiṃ te atthe nipphādite saṃvacchare satasahassuṭṭhānake pañca gāmavare dadāmīti.
Evañca pana vatvā "samma luddaputta ahaṃ 'etaṃ chaddantahatthiṃ mārāpetvā yamakadante āharāpetuṃ samatthā homī'ti pubbe paccekabuddhānaṃ dānaṃ datvā patthanaṃ paṭṭhapesiṃ, mayā supinantena diṭṭhaṃ nāma natthi, sā pana mayā patthitapatthanā samijjhissati, tvaṃ gacchanto mā bhāyī"ti taṃ samassāsetvā pesesi.
So "sādhu, ayye"ti tassā vacanaṃ sampaṭicchitvā "tena hi me pākaṭaṃ katvā tassa vasanaṭṭhānaṃ kathehī"ti pucchanto imaṃ gāthamāha –
111.
"Katthacchatī kattha mupeti ṭhānaṃ, vīthissa kā nhānagatassa hoti;
Kathañhi so nhāyati nāgarājā, kathaṃ vijānemu gatiṃ gajassā"ti.
Tattha katthacchatīti kattha vasati.
Kattha mupetīti kattha upeti, kattha tiṭṭhatīti attho.
Vīthissa kāti tassa nhānagatassa kā vīthi hoti, kataramaggena so gacchati.
Kathaṃ vijānemu gatinti tayā akathite mayaṃ kathaṃ tassa nāgarājassa gatiṃ vijānissāma, tasmā kathehi noti attho.
Tato sā jātissarañāṇena paccakkhato diṭṭhaṭṭhānaṃ tassa ācikkhantī dve gāthā abhāsi –
112.
"Tattheva sā pokkharaṇī adūre, rammā sutitthā ca mahodikā ca;
Sampupphitā bhamaragaṇānuciṇṇā, ettha hi so nhāyati nāgarājā.
113.
"Sīsaṃ nahātuppalamālabhārī, sabbaseto puṇḍarīkattacaṅgī;
Āmodamāno gacchati sanniketaṃ, purakkhatvā mahesiṃ sabbabhadda"nti.
Tattha tatthevāti tassa vasanaṭṭhāneyeva.
Pokkharaṇīti chaddantadahaṃ sandhāyāha.
Sampupphitāti duvidhehi kumudehi tividhehi uppalehi pañcavaṇṇehi ca padumehi samantato pupphitā.
Ettha hi soti so nāgarājā ettha chaddantadahe nhāyati.
Uppalamālabhārīti uppalādīnaṃ jalajathalajānaṃ pupphānaṃ mālaṃ dhārento.
Puṇḍarīkattacaṅgīti puṇḍarīkasadisatacena odātena aṅgena samannāgato.
Āmodamānoti āmoditapamodito.
Sanniketanti attano vasanaṭṭhānaṃ.
Purakkhatvāti sabbabhaddaṃ nāma mahesiṃ purato katvā aṭṭhahi nāgasahassehi parivuto attano vasanaṭṭhānaṃ gacchatīti.
Taṃ sutvā sonuttaro "sādhu ayye, ahaṃ taṃ vāraṇaṃ māretvā tassa dante āharissāmī"ti sampaṭicchi.
Athassa sā tuṭṭhā sahassaṃ datvā "gehaṃ tāva gaccha, ito sattāhaccayena tattha gamissasī"ti taṃ uyyojetvā kammāre pakkosāpetvā "tātā amhākaṃ vāsipharasu-kuddāla-nikhādana-muṭṭhikaveḷugumbacchedana-sattha-tiṇalāyana-asilohadaṇḍakakacakhāṇuka- ayasiṅghāṭakehi attho, sabbaṃ sīghaṃ katvā āharathā"ti āṇāpetvā cammakāre pakkosāpetvā "tātā amhākaṃ kumbhabhāragāhitaṃ cammabhastaṃ kātuṃ vaṭṭati, cammayottavarattahatthipādaupāhanacammachattehipi no attho, sabbaṃ sīghaṃ katvā āharathā"ti āṇāpesi.
Te ubhopi sabbāni tāni sīghaṃ katvā āharitvā adaṃsu.
Sā tassa pātheyyaṃ saṃvidahitvā araṇisahitaṃ ādiṃ katvā sabbaṃ upakaraṇañca baddhasattumādiṃ katvā pātheyyañca cammabhastāyaṃ pakkhipi, taṃ sabbampi kumbhabhāramattaṃ ahosi.
Sonuttaropi attano parivacchaṃ katvā sattame divase āgantvā deviṃ vanditvā aṭṭhāsi.
Atha naṃ sā "niṭṭhitaṃ te samma sabbūpakaraṇaṃ, imaṃ tāva pasibbakaṃ gaṇhā"ti āha.
So pana mahāthāmo pañcannaṃ hatthīnaṃ balaṃ dhāreti, tasmā tambūlapasibbakaṃ viya ukkhipitvā upakacchantare ṭhapetvā rittahattho viya aṭṭhāsi.
Subhaddā luddassa puttadārānaṃ paribbayaṃ datvā rañño ācikkhitvā sonuttaraṃ uyyojesi.
Sopi rājānañca deviñca vanditvā rājanivesanā oruyha rathe ṭhatvā mahantena parivārena nagarā nikkhamitvā gāmanigamajanapadaparamparāya paccantaṃ patvā jānapade nivattetvā paccantavāsīhi saddhiṃ araññaṃ pavisitvā manussapathaṃ atikkamma paccantavāsinopi nivattetvā ekakova gacchanto tiṃsayojanaṃ patvā paṭhamaṃ dabbagahanaṃ kāsagahanaṃ tiṇagahanaṃ tulasigahanaṃ saragahanaṃ tirivacchagahananti cha gahanāni, kaṇṭakaveḷugumbagahanāni vettagahanaṃ omissakagahanaṃ naḷagahanaṃ saragahanasadisaṃ uragenapi dubbinivijjhaṃ ghanavanagahanaṃ rukkhagahanaṃ veḷugahanaṃ aparampi veḷugumbagahanaṃ kalalagahanaṃ udakagahanaṃ pabbatagahananti aṭṭhārasa gahanāni paṭipāṭiyā patvā dabbagahanādīni asitena lāyitvā tulasigahanādīni veḷugumbacchedanasatthena chinditvā rukkhe pharasunā koṭṭetvā atimahante rukkhe nikhādanena vijjhitvā maggaṃ karonto veḷuvane nisseṇiṃ katvā veḷugumbaṃ āruyha veḷuṃ chinditvā aparassa veḷugumbassa upari pātetvā veḷugumbamatthakena gantvā kalalagahane sukkharukkhapadaraṃ attharitvā tena gantvā aparaṃ attharitvā itaraṃ ukkhipitvā puna purato attharanto taṃ atikkamitvā udakagahane doṇiṃ katvā tāya udakagahanaṃ taritvā pabbatapāde ṭhatvā ayasiṅghāṭakaṃ yottena bandhitvā uddhaṃ khipitvā pabbate laggāpetvā yottenāruyha vajiraggena lohadaṇḍena pabbataṃ vijjhitvā khāṇukaṃ koṭṭetvā tattha ṭhatvā siṅghāṭakaṃ ākaḍḍhitvā puna upari laggāpetvā tattha ṭhito cammayottaṃ olambetvā taṃ ādāya otaritvā heṭṭhimakhāṇuke bandhitvā vāmahatthena yottaṃ gahetvā dakkhiṇahatthena muggaraṃ ādāya yottaṃ paharitvā khāṇukaṃ nīharitvā puna abhiruhati.
Etenupāyena pabbatamatthakaṃ abhiruyha parato otaranto purimanayeneva paṭhamaṃ pabbatamatthake khāṇukaṃ koṭṭetvā cammapasibbake yottaṃ bandhitvā khāṇuke veṭhetvā sayaṃ antopasibbake nisīditvā makkaṭakānaṃ makkaṭasuttavissajjanākārena yottaṃ viniveṭhento otarati.
Cammachattena vātaṃ gāhāpetvā sakuṇo viya otaratītipi vadantiyeva.
Evaṃ tassa subhaddāya vacanaṃ ādāya nagarā nikkhamitvā sattarasa gahanāni atikkamitvā pabbatagahanaṃ patvā tatrāpi cha pabbate atikkamitvā suvaṇṇapassapabbatamatthakaṃ āruḷhabhāvaṃ āvikaronto satthā āha –

"Tattheva so uggahetvāna vākyaṃ, ādāya tūṇiñca dhanuñca luddo;
Vituriyati satta girī brahante, suvaṇṇapassaṃ nāma giriṃ uḷāraṃ.
115.
"Āruyha selaṃ bhavanaṃ kinnarānaṃ, olokayī pabbatapādamūlaṃ;
Tatthaddasā meghasamānavaṇṇaṃ, nigrodharājaṃ aṭṭhasahassapādaṃ.
116.
"Tatthaddasā kuñjaraṃ chabbisāṇaṃ, sabbasetaṃ duppasahaṃ parebhi;
Rakkhanti naṃ aṭṭhasahassanāgā, īsādantā vātajavappahārino.
117.
"Tatthaddasā pokkharaṇiṃ adūre, rammaṃ sutitthañca mahodikañca;
Sampupphitaṃ bhamaragaṇānuciṇṇaṃ, yattha hi so nhāyati nāgarājā.
118.
"Disvāna nāgassa gatiṃ ṭhitiñca, vīthissayā nhānagatassa hoti;
Opātamāgacchi anariyarūpo, payojito cittavasānugāyā"ti.
Tattha soti, bhikkhave, so luddo tattheva sattabhūmikapāsādatale ṭhitāya tassā subhaddāya vacanaṃ uggahetvā saratūṇiñca mahādhanuñca ādāya pabbatagahanaṃ patvā "kataro nu kho suvaṇṇapassapabbato nāmā"ti satta mahāpabbate vituriyati, tasmiṃ kāle tuleti tīreti.
So evaṃ tīrento suvaṇṇapassaṃ nāma giriṃ uḷāraṃ disvā "ayaṃ so bhavissatī"ti cintesi.
Olokayīti taṃ kinnarānaṃ bhavanabhūtaṃ pabbataṃ āruyha subhaddāya dinnasaññāvasena heṭṭhā olokesi.
Tatthāti tasmiṃ pabbatapādamūle avidūreyeva taṃ nigrodhaṃ addasa.
Tatthāti tasmiṃ nigrodharukkhamūle ṭhitaṃ.
Tatthāti tattheva antopabbate tassa nigrodhassāvidūre yattha so nhāyati, taṃ pokkharaṇiṃ addasa.
Disvānāti suvaṇṇapassapabbatā oruyha hatthīnaṃ gatakāle hatthipādaupāhanaṃ āruyha tassa nāgarañño gataṭṭhānaṃ nibaddhavasanaṭṭhānaṃ upadhārento "iminā maggena gacchati, idha nhāyati, nhatvā uttiṇṇo, idha tiṭṭhatī"ti sabbaṃ disvā ahirikabhāvena anariyarūpo tāya cittavasānugāya payojito, tasmā opātaṃ āgacchi paṭipajji, āvāṭaṃ khaṇīti attho.
Tatrāyaṃ anupubbikathā – "so kira mahāsattassa vasanokāsaṃ sattamāsādhikehi sattahi saṃvaccharehi sattahi ca divasehi patvā vuttanayeneva tassa vasanokāsaṃ sallakkhetvā "idha āvāṭaṃ khaṇitvā tasmiṃ ṭhito vāraṇādhipatiṃ visapītena sallena vijjhitvā jīvitakkhayaṃ pāpessāmī"ti vavatthapetvā araññaṃ pavisitvā thambhādīnaṃ atthāya rukkhe chinditvā dabbasambhāre sajjetvā hatthīsu nhānatthāya gatesu tassa vasanokāse mahākuddālena caturassaṃ āvāṭaṃ khaṇitvā uddhatapaṃsuṃ bījaṃ vapanto viya udakena vikiritvā udukkhalapāsāṇānaṃ upari thambhe patiṭṭhapetvā tulā ca kāje ca datvā padarāni attharitvā kaṇḍappamāṇaṃ chiddaṃ katvā upari paṃsuñca kacavarañca pakkhipitvā ekena passena attano pavisanaṭṭhānaṃ katvā evaṃ niṭṭhite āvāṭe paccūsakāleyeva patisīsakaṃ paṭimuñcitvā kāsāyāni paridahitvā saddhiṃ visapītena sallena dhanuṃ ādāya āvāṭaṃ otaritvā aṭṭhāsi.
Tamatthaṃ pakāsento satthā āha –
119.
"Khaṇitvāna kāsuṃ phalakehi chādayi, attānamodhāya dhanuñca luddo;
Passāgataṃ puthusallena nāgaṃ, samappayī dukkaṭakammakārī.
120.
"Viddho ca nāgo koñcamanādi ghoraṃ, sabbe ca nāgā ninnaduṃ ghorarūpaṃ;
Tiṇañca kaṭṭhañca raṇaṃ karontā, dhāviṃsu te aṭṭha disā samantato.
121.
"Vadhissametanti parāmasanto, kāsāvamaddakkhi dhajaṃ isīnaṃ;
Dukkhena phuṭṭhassudapādi saññā, arahaddhajo sabbhi avajjharūpo"ti.
Tattha odhāyāti odahitvā pavesetvā.
Passāgatanti attano āvāṭassa passaṃ āgataṃ.
So kira dutiyadivase āgantvā nhatvā uttiṇṇo tasmiṃ mahāvisālamālake nāma padese aṭṭhāsi.
Athassa sarīrato udakaṃ nābhipadesena ogalitvā tena chiddena luddassa sarīre pati.
Tāya saññāya so mahāsattassa āgantvā ṭhitabhāvaṃ ñatvā taṃ passāgataṃ puthunā sallena samappayi vijjhi.
Dukkaṭakammakārīti tassa mahāsattassa kāyikacetasikassa dukkhassa uppādanena dukkaṭassa kammassa kārako.
Koñcamanādīti koñcanādaṃ akari.
Tassa kira taṃ sallaṃ nābhiyaṃ pavisitvā pihakādīni sañcuṇṇetvā antāni chinditvā piṭṭhibhāgaṃ pharasunā padālentaṃ viya uggantvā ākāse pakkhandi.
Bhinnarajatakumbhato rajanaṃ viya pahāramukhena lohitaṃ pagghari, balavavedanā uppajji.
So vedanaṃ adhivāsetuṃ asakkonto vedanāppatto sakalapabbataṃ ekaninnādaṃ karonto tikkhattuṃ mahantaṃ koñcanādaṃ nadi.
Sabbe cāti tepi sabbe aṭṭhasahassanāgā taṃ saddaṃ sutvā maraṇabhayabhītā ghorarūpaṃ ninnaduṃ anuravaṃ kariṃsu.
Raṇaṃ karontāti tena saddena gantvā chaddantavāraṇaṃ vedanāppattaṃ disvā "paccāmittaṃ gaṇhissāmā"ti tiṇañca kaṭṭhañca cuṇṇavicuṇṇaṃ karontā samantā dhāviṃsu.
Vadhissametanti "bhikkhave, so chaddantavāraṇo disā pakkantesu nāgesu subhaddāya kareṇuyā passe ṭhatvā sandhāretvā samassāsayamānāya vedanaṃ adhivāsetvā kaṇḍassa āgataṭṭhānaṃ sallakkhento 'sace idaṃ puratthimadisādīhi āgataṃ abhavissa, kumbhādīhi pavisitvā pacchimakāyīdīhi nikkhamissa, idaṃ pana nābhiyā pavisitvā ākāsaṃ pakkhandi, tasmā pathaviyaṃ ṭhitena vissaṭṭhaṃ bhavissatī'ti upadhāretvā ṭhitaṭṭhānaṃ upaparikkhitukāmo "ko jānāti, kiṃ bhavissati, subhaddaṃ apanetuṃ vaṭṭatī"ti cintetvā "bhadde, aṭṭhasahassanāgā mama paccāmittaṃ pariyesantā disā pakkhandā, tvaṃ idha kiṃ karosī"ti vatvā, "deva, ahaṃ tumhe sandhāretvā samassāsentī ṭhitā, khamatha me"ti tikkhattuṃ padakkhiṇaṃ katvā catūsu ṭhānesu vanditvā tāya ākāsaṃ pakkhandāya nāgarājā bhūmiṃ pādanakhena pahari, padaraṃ uppatitvā gataṃ.
So chiddena olokento sonuttaraṃ disvā "vadhissāmi na"nti cittaṃ uppādetvā rajatadāmavaṇṇasoṇḍaṃ pavesetvā parāmasanto buddhānaṃ isīnaṃ dhajaṃ kāsāvaṃ addakkhi.
Luddo kāsāvaṃ mahāsattassa hatthe ṭhapesi.
So taṃ ukkhipitvā purato ṭhapesi.
Athassa tena tathārūpenapi dukkhena phuṭṭhassa "arahaddhajo nāma sabbhi paṇḍitehi avajjharūpo, aññadatthu sakkātabbo garukātabboyevā"ti ayaṃ saññā udapādi.
So tena saddhiṃ sallapanto gāthādvayamāha –
122.
"Anikkasāvo kāsāvaṃ, yo vatthaṃ paridahissati;
Apeto damasaccena, na so kāsāvamarahati.
123.
"Yo ca vantakasāvassa, sīlesu susamāhito;
Upeto damasaccena, sa ve kāsāvamarahatī"ti.
Tassattho – samma luddaputta yo puriso rāgādīhi kasāvehi anikkasāvo indriyadamena ceva vacīsaccena ca apeto anupagato tehi guṇehi kasāvarasapītaṃ kāsāvavatthaṃ paridahati, so taṃ kāsāvaṃ nārahati, nānucchaviko so tassa vatthassa.
Yo pana tesaṃ kasāvānaṃ vantattā vantakasāvo assa sīlesu susamāhito supatiṭṭhito paripuṇṇasīlācāro, so taṃ kāsāvaṃ arahati nāmāti.
Evaṃ vatvā mahāsatto tasmiṃ cittaṃ nibbāpetvā "samma kimatthaṃ tvaṃ maṃ vijjhasi, kiṃ attano atthāya, udāhu aññena payojitosī"ti pucchi.
Tamatthaṃ āvīkaronto satthā āha –
124.
"Samappito puthusallena nāgo, aduṭṭhacitto luddakamajjhabhāsi;
Kimatthayaṃ kissa vā samma hetu, mamaṃ vadhī kassa vāyaṃ payogo"ti.
Tattha kimatthayanti āyatiṃ kiṃ patthento.
Kissa vāti kissa hetu kena kāraṇena, kiṃ nāma tava mayā saddhiṃ veranti adhippāyo.
Kassa vāti kassa vā aññassa ayaṃ payogo, kena payojito maṃ avadhīti attho.
Athassa ācikkhanto luddo gāthamāha –
125.
"Kāsissa rañño mahesī bhadante, sā pūjitā rājakule subhaddā;
Taṃ addasā sā ca mamaṃ asaṃsi, dantehi atthoti ca maṃ avocā"ti.
Tattha pūjitāti aggamahesiṭṭhāne ṭhapetvā pūjitā.
Addasāti sā kira taṃ supinante addasa.
Asaṃsīti sā ca mama sakkāraṃ kāretvā "himavantapadese evarūpo nāma nāgo asukasmiṃ nāma ṭhāne vasatī"ti mamaṃ ācikkhi.
Dantehīti tassa nāgassa chabbaṇṇaraṃsisamujjalā dantā, tehi mama attho, piḷandhanaṃ kāretukāmāmhi, te me āharāti maṃ avocāti.
Taṃ sutvā "idaṃ cūḷasubhaddāya kamma"nti ñatvā mahāsatto vedanaṃ adhivāsetvā "tassā mama dantehi attho natthi, maṃ māretukāmatāya pana pahiṇī"ti dīpento gāthādvayamāha –
126.
"Bahū hime dantayugā uḷārā, ye me pitūnañca pitāmahānaṃ;
Jānāti sā kodhanā rājaputtī, vadhatthikā veramakāsi bālā.
127.
"Uṭṭhehi tvaṃ ludda kharaṃ gahetvā, dante ime chinda purā marāmi;
Vajjāsi taṃ kodhanaṃ rājaputtiṃ, nāgo hato handa imassa dantā"ti.
Tattha imeti tassa kira pitu pitāmahānaṃ dantā mā vinassantūti guhāyaṃ sannicitā, te sandhāya evamāha.
Jānātīti bahūnaṃ vāraṇānaṃ idha sannicihe dante jānāti.
Vadhatthikāti kevalaṃ pana sā maṃ māretukāmā appamattakaṃ dosaṃ hadaye ṭhapetvā attano veraṃ akāsi, evarūpena pharusakammena matthakaṃ pāpesi.
Kharanti kakacaṃ.
Purā marāmīti yāva na marāmi.
Vajjasīti vadeyyāsi.
Handa imassa dantāti hato so mayā nāgo, manoratho te matthakappatto, gaṇha, ime tassa dantāti.
So tassa vacanaṃ sutvā nisīdanaṭṭhānā vuṭṭhāya kakacaṃ ādāya "dante chindissāmī"ti tassa santikaṃ upagato.
So pana ubbedhato aṭṭhāsītihattho rajatapabbato viya ṭhito, tenassa so dantaṭṭhānaṃ na pāpuṇi.
Atha mahāsatto kāyaṃ upanāmento heṭṭhāsīsako nipajji.
Tadā nesādo mahāsattassa rajatadāmasadisaṃ soṇḍaṃ maddanto abhiruhitvā kelāsakūṭe viya kumbhe ṭhatvā mukhakoṭimaṃsaṃ dhanukena paharitvā anto pakkhipitvā kumbhato oruyha kakacaṃ antomukhe pavesesi, ubhohi hatthehi daḷhaṃ aparāparaṃ kaḍḍhi.
Mahāsattassa balavavedanā uppajji, mukhaṃ lohitena pūri.
Nesādo ito cito ca sañcārento kakacena chindituṃ nāsakkhi.
Atha naṃ mahāsatto mukhato lohitaṃ chaḍḍetvā vedanaṃ adhivāsetvā "kiṃ samma chindituṃ na sakkosī"ti pucchi.
"Āma, sāmī"ti.
Mahāsatto satiṃ paccupaṭṭhapetvā "tena hi samma mama soṇḍaṃ ukkhipitvā kakacakoṭiṃ gaṇhāpehi, mama sayaṃ soṇḍaṃ ukkhipituṃ balaṃ natthī"ti āha.
Nesādo tathā akāsi.
Mahāsatto soṇḍāya kakacaṃ gahetvā aparāparaṃ cāresi, dantā kaḷīrā viya chijjiṃsu.
Atha naṃ te āharāpetvā gaṇhitvā "samma luddaputta ahaṃ ime dante tuyhaṃ dadamāno neva 'mayhaṃ appiyā'ti dammi, na sakkattamārattabrahmattāni patthento, imehi pana me dantehi sataguṇena sahassaguṇena satasahassaguṇena sabbaññutaññāṇadantāva piyatarā, sabbaññutaññāṇappaṭivedhāya me idaṃ puññaṃ paccayo hotū"ti dante datvā "samma idaṃ ṭhānaṃ kittakena kālena āgatosī"ti pucchitvā "sattamāsasattadivasādhikehi sattahi saṃvaccharehī"ti vutte – "gaccha imesaṃ dantānaṃ ānubhāvena sattadivasabbhantareyeva bārāṇasiṃ pāpuṇissasī"ti vatvā tassa parittaṃ katvā taṃ uyyojesi.
Uyyojetvā ca pana anāgatesuyeva tesu nāgesu subhaddāya ca anāgatāya kālamakāsi.
Tamatthaṃ pakāsento satthā āha –
128.
"Uṭṭhāya so luddo kharaṃ gahetvā, chetvāna dantāni gajuttamassa;
Vaggū subhe appaṭime pathabyā, ādāya pakkāmi tato hi khippa"nti.
Tattha vaggūti vilāsavante.
Subheti sundare.
Appaṭimeti imissaṃ pathaviyaṃ aññehi dantehi asadiseti.
Tasmiṃ pakkante te nāgā paccāmittaṃ adisvā āgamiṃsu.
Tamatthaṃ pakāsento satthā āha –
129.
"Bhayaṭṭitā nāgavadhena aṭṭā, ye te nāgā aṭṭha disā vidhāvuṃ;
Adisvāna posaṃ gajapaccamittaṃ, paccāgamuṃ yena so nāgarājā"ti.
Tattha bhayaṭṭitāti maraṇabhayena upaddutā.
Aṭṭāti dukkhitā.
Gajapaccamittanti gajassa paccāmittaṃ.
Yena soti yattha visālamālake so nāgarājā kālaṃ katvā kelāsapabbato viya patito, taṃ ṭhānaṃ paccāgamunti attho.
Tehi pana saddhiṃ mahāsubhaddāpi āgatā.
Te sabbepi aṭṭhasahassanāgā tattha roditvā kanditvā mahāsattassa kulupakānaṃ paccekabuddhānaṃ santikaṃ gantvā, "bhante, tumhākaṃ paccayadāyako visapītena sallena viddho kālakato, sīvathikadassanamassa āgacchathā"ti vadiṃsu.
Pañcasatā paccekabuddhāpi ākāsenāgantvā visālamālake otariṃsu.
Tasmiṃ khaṇe dve taruṇanāgā nāgarañño sarīraṃ dantehi ukkhipitvā paccekabuddhe vandāpetvā citakaṃ āropetvā jhāpayiṃsu.
Paccekabuddhā sabbarattiṃ āḷāhane dhammasajjhāyamakaṃsu.
Aṭṭhasahassanāgā āḷāhanaṃ nibbāpetvā vanditvā nhatvā mahāsubhaddaṃ purato katvā attano vasanaṭṭhānaṃ agamaṃsu.
Tamatthaṃ pakāsento satthā āha –
130.
"Te tattha kanditvā roditvāna nāgā, sīse sake paṃsukaṃ okiritvā;
Agamaṃsu te sabbe sakaṃ niketaṃ, purakkhatvā mahesiṃ sabbabhadda"nti.
Tattha paṃsukanti āḷāhanapaṃsukaṃ.
Sonuttaropi appatteyeva sattame divase dante ādāya bārāṇasiṃ sampāpuṇi.
Tamatthaṃ pakāsento satthā āha –
131.
"Ādāya dantāni gajuttamassa, vaggū subhe appaṭime pathabyā;
Suvaṇṇarājīhi samantamodare, so luddako kāsipuraṃ upāgami;
Upanesi so rājakaññāya dante, nāgo hato handa imassa dantā"ti.
Tattha suvaṇṇarājīhīti suvaṇṇarājiraṃsīhi.
Samantamodareti samantato obhāsante sakalavanasaṇḍaṃ suvaṇṇavaṇṇaṃ viya karonte.
Upanesīti ahaṃ chaddantavāraṇassa chabbaṇṇaraṃsivissajjane yamakadante ādāya āgacchāmi, nagaraṃ alaṅkārāpethāti deviyā sāsanaṃ pesetvā tāya rañño ārocāpetvā devanagaraṃ viya nagare alaṅkārāpite sonuttaropi nagaraṃ pavisitvā pāsādaṃ āruhitvā dante upanesi, upanetvā ca pana, "ayye, yassa kira tumhe appamattakaṃ dosaṃ hadaye karittha, so nāgo mayā hato mato, 'matabhāvaṃ me āroceyyāsī'ti āha, tassa matabhāvaṃ tumhe jānātha, gaṇhatha, ime tassa dantā"ti dante adāsi.
Sā mahāsattassa chabbaṇṇaraṃsivicittadante maṇitālavaṇṭena gahetvā ūrūsu ṭhapetvā purimabhave attano pirasāmikassa dante olokentī "evarūpaṃ sobhaggappattaṃ vāraṇaṃ visapītena sallena jīvitakkhayaṃ pāpetvā ime dante chinditvā sonuttaro āgato"ti mahāsattaṃ anussarantī sokaṃ uppādetvā adhivāsetuṃ nāsakkhi.
Athassā tattheva hadayaṃ phali, taṃ divasameva kālamakāsi.
Tamatthaṃ pakāsento satthā āha –
132.
"Disvāna dantāni gajuttamassa, bhattuppiyassa purimāya jātiyā;
Tattheva tassā hadayaṃ aphāli, teneva sā kālamakāsi bālā"ti.
133.
"Sambodhipatto sa mahānubhāvo, sitaṃ akāsī parisāya majjhe;
Pucchiṃsu bhikkhū suvimuttacittā, nākāraṇe pātukaronti buddhā.
134.
"Yamaddasātha dahariṃ kumāriṃ, kāsāyavatthaṃ anagāriyaṃ carantiṃ;
Sā kho tadā rājakaññā ahosi, ahaṃ tadā nāgarājā ahosiṃ.
135.
"Ādāya dantāni gajuttamassa, vaggū subhe appaṭime pathabyā;
Yo luddako kāsipuraṃ upāgami, so kho tadā devadatto ahosi.
136.
"Anāvasūraṃ cirarattasaṃsitaṃ, uccāvacaṃ caritamidaṃ purāṇaṃ;
Vītaddaro vītasoko visallo, sayaṃ abhiññāya abhāsi buddho.
137.
"Ahaṃ vo tena kālena, ahosiṃ tattha bhikkhavo;
Nāgarājā tadā homi, evaṃ dhāretha jātaka"nti. –
Imā gāthā dasabalassa guṇe vaṇṇentehi dhammasaṅgāhakattherehi ṭhapitā.
Tattha sitaṃ akāsīti so sambodhippatto satthā mahānubhāvo alaṅkatadhammasabhāyaṃ alaṅkatadhammāsane parisamajjhe nisinno ekadivasaṃ sitaṃ akāsi.
Nākāraṇeti "bhante, buddhā nāma akāraṇe sitaṃ na karonti, tumhehi ca sitaṃ kataṃ, kena nu kho kāraṇena sitaṃ kata"nti mahākhīṇāsavā bhikkhū pucchiṃsu.
Yamaddasāthāti evaṃ puṭṭho, āvuso, satthā attano sitakāraṇaṃ ācikkhanto ekaṃ daharabhikkhuniṃ dassetvā evamāha – "bhikkhave, yaṃ ekaṃ daharaṃ yobbanappattaṃ kumāriṃ kāsāyavatthaṃ anagāriyaṃ upetaṃ pabbajitvā imasmiṃ sāsane carantiṃ addasātha passatha, sā tadā 'visapītena sallena nāgarājaṃ vijjhitvā vadhehī"'ti sonuttarassa pesetā rājakaññā ahosi.
Tena gantvā jīvitakkhayaṃ pāpito ahaṃ tadā so nāgarājā ahosinti attho.
Devadattoti, bhikkhave, idāni devadatto tadā so luddako ahosi.
Anāvasūranti na avasūraṃ, anatthaṅgatasūriyanti attho.
Cirarattasaṃsitanti ito ciraratte anekavassakoṭimatthake saṃsitaṃ saṃsaritaṃ anuciṇṇaṃ.
Idaṃ vuttaṃ hoti – āvuso, ito anekavassakoṭimatthake saṃsaritampi pubbaṇhe kataṃ taṃ divasameva sāyanhe saranto viya attano caritavasena uccattā tāya rājadhītāya ca sonuttarassa ca caritavasena nīcattā uccānīcaṃ caritaṃ idaṃ purāṇaṃ rāgādīnaṃ darānaṃ vigatatāya vītaddaro, ñātidhanasokādīnaṃ abhāvena vītasoko, rāgasallādīnaṃ vigatattā visallo attanāva jānitvā buddho abhāsīti.
Ahaṃ voti ettha voti nipātamattaṃ, bhikkhave, ahaṃ tena kālena tattha chaddantadahe ahosinti attho.
Nāgarājāti honto ca pana na añño koci tadā homi, atha kho nāgarājā homīti attho.
Evaṃ cārethāti tumhe taṃ jātakaṃ evaṃ dhāretha uggaṇhātha pariyāpuṇāthāti.
Imañca pana dhammadesanaṃ sutvā bahū sotāpannādayo ahesuṃ.
Sā pana bhikkhunī pacchā vipassitvā arahattaṃ pattāti.
Chaddantajātakavaṇṇanā catutthā.
