97.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ –
|
§97. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
|

"Kalyāṇasīlo, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyāṇadhammo kalyāṇapañño imasmiṃ dhammavinaye 'kevalī vusitavā uttamapuriso'ti vuccati –
|
“Monks, a monk who has admirable virtue, admirable qualities, & admirable discernment is called, in this Dhamma-&-Vinaya, one who is complete, fulfilled, a superlative person.
|
|
|
"Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyāṇasīlo hoti?
|
“And how is a monk a person with admirable virtue?
|
|
|
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti, pātimokkhasaṃvarasaṃvuto viharati, ācāragocarasampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī, samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu.
|
There is the case where a monk is virtuous. He dwells restrained in accordance with the Pāṭimokkha, consummate in his behavior & sphere of activity. He trains himself, having undertaken the training rules, seeing danger in the slightest faults.
|
|
|
Evaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyāṇasīlo hoti.
|
In this way a monk is a person with admirable virtue.
|
|
|
Iti kalyāṇasīlo.
|
Thus he is of admirable virtue.
|
|
|
"Kalyāṇadhammo ca kathaṃ hoti?
|
“And how is a monk a person with admirable qualities?
|
|
|
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sattannaṃ bodhipakkhiyānaṃ dhammānaṃ bhāvanānuyogamanuyutto viharati.
|
There is the case where a monk lives devoted to developing the seven [sets of] qualities that are wings to awakening.1
|
|
|
Evaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyāṇadhammo hoti.
|
In this way a monk is a person with admirable qualities.
|
|
|
Iti kalyāṇasīlo, kalyāṇadhammo.
|
Thus he is of admirable virtue & admirable qualities.
|
|
|
"Kalyāṇapañño ca kathaṃ hoti ?
|
“And how is a monk a person with admirable discernment?
|
|
|
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.
|
There is the case where a monk–with the ending of effluents–remains in the effluent-free awareness-release & discernment-release, directly knowing & realizing it for himself right in the here-&-now.
|
|
|
Evaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyāṇapañño hoti.
|
In this way a monk is a person with admirable discernment.
|
|
|
"Iti kalyāṇasīlo kalyāṇadhammo kalyāṇapañño imasmiṃ dhammavinaye 'kevalī vusitavā uttamapuriso'ti vuccatī"ti.
|
Thus he is of admirable virtue, admirable qualities, admirable discernment. In this Dhamma-&-Vinaya he is called one who is complete, fulfilled, a superlative person.”

|
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.
|
[This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
|
|
|
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati –
|
[So with regard to this it was said:]
|
|
|
"Yassa kāyena vācāya, manasā natthi dukkaṭaṃ;
|
Devoid of wrong-doing in thought, word, or deed,
|
|
|
Taṃ ve kalyāṇasīloti, āhu bhikkhuṃ hirīmanaṃ [hirīmataṃ (syā. ka.)].
|
he’s called a person of admirable virtue: the monk conscientious.
|
|
|
"Yassa dhammā subhāvitā, satta [patta (sabbattha)] sambodhigāmino;
|
Well-developed in the qualities that go to the attainment of self-awakening,
|
|
|
Taṃ ve kalyāṇadhammoti, āhu bhikkhuṃ anussadaṃ.
|
he’s called a person of admirable qualities: the monk unassuming.
|
|
|
"Yo dukkhassa pajānāti, idheva khayamattano;
|
Discerning right here for himself, in himself, the ending of stress
|
|
|
Taṃ ve kalyāṇapaññoti, āhu bhikkhuṃ anāsavaṃ.
|
he’s called a person of admirable discernment: the monk with no effluent.
|
|
|
"Tehi dhammehi sampannaṃ, anīghaṃ chinnasaṃsayaṃ;
|
Consummate in these things, untroubled, with doubt cut away,
|
|
|
Asitaṃ sabbalokassa, āhu sabbapahāyina"nti.
|
unattached in all the world, he’s said to have abandoned the All.
|
|
|
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
|
[This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
|
