93.Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ – §93. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Tayome, bhikkhave, aggī. “Monks, there are these three fires.
Katame tayo? Which three?
Rāgaggi, dosaggi, mohaggi – ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo aggī"ti. The fire of passion, the fire of aversion, the fire of delusion. These are the three fires.”
Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca. [This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said.]
Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati – [So with regard to this it was said:]
"Rāgaggi dahati macce, ratte kāmesu mucchite; The fire of passion burns in a mortal delighting in, smitten with sensual desires;
Dosaggi pana byāpanne, nare pāṇātipātino. the fire of aversion, in a malevolent person taking life;
"Mohaggi pana sammūḷhe, ariyadhamme akovide; the fire of delusion, in a bewildered person ignorant of the noble teaching.
Ete aggī ajānantā, sakkāyābhiratā pajā. Not understanding these fires, people –fond of self-identity–
"Te vaḍḍhayanti nirayaṃ, tiracchānañca yoniyo; [] swell the ranks of hell, the wombs of common animals,
Asuraṃ pettivisayaṃ, amuttā mārabandhanā. demons, the realm of the hungry ghosts. [unreleased from Māra’s shackles,]
"Ye ca rattindivā yuttā, sammāsambuddhasāsane; While those who, day & night, are devoted to the message of the rightly self-awakened,
Te nibbāpenti rāgaggiṃ, niccaṃ asubhasaññino. put out the fire of passion, constantly perceiving the foul.
"Dosaggiṃ pana mettāya, nibbāpenti naruttamā; They, superlative people, put out the fire of aversion with good will,
Mohaggiṃ pana paññāya, yāyaṃ nibbedhagāminī. and the fire of delusion with the discernment leading to penetration.
"Te nibbāpetvā nipakā, rattindivamatanditā; They, the masterful, untiring by night & day, having put out [the fires],
Asesaṃ parinibbanti, asesaṃ dukkhamaccaguṃ. having, without remainder, comprehended stress, are, without remainder, totally unbound.
"Ariyaddasā vedaguno, sammadaññāya paṇḍitā; They, the wise, with an attainer-of-wisdom’s noble vision, right gnosis,
Jātikkhayamabhiññāya, nāgacchanti punabbhava"nti. directly knowing the ending of birth, come to no further becoming.
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. [This, too, was the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One, so I have heard.]
